Well, killing init...thats likely a kernel problem.

If the CD has worked prior, then its either dirty, scratched, or its actually installed on the drive.

Are you sure you are booting to CD? Remove the hard drive from the boot order and try booting to the CD.

well, I had it going...then I took out the cd and it froze...so I put the cd back in and rebooted the comp...and now it just gives me that error. I'll try removing the hard drive. be right back to let you know.

now all it gives me is

    invalid compression format (err=2)

    --system halted

thats what I got this time.

crc errors usually are due to damaged CDs...how does the surface look?

brand new cd. not a scratch. but one thing I just realized.. I used ImgBurn to burn the cd...and for some reason at the end of the burn I got some weird error and kept retrying and it wouldn't work..so I continued and the disk was made...

that could be a potential problem...but still wouldn't explain why the cd worked the 1st time..and isn't working now.

Yes, check the disc and I would zero out the HDD as well. That generally fixed my similar issues with Xubuntu FF.

still aint workin...I'm gonna try Alcohol 120 trial version and burn my last cd...but if most likely possibilitys of it not working because the cd is scratched...would it be possible to put the .ISO on an external hard drive...along with Daemon Tools...and load it from there?

That I dont know...I doubt it, cause Daemon tools requires windows to run, right?

about a week ago...my hard drive on my other computer failed...crashed...and lost all my data on it (no biggie had the main stuff...music, movies etc..backed up an an external...) for weeks it made this strange ticking noise until it failed...stuck it in the project pc, not a sound....ubuntu is loaded.

now before you leave...how do I load it onto the hard drive?...so that way I don't need the disk..

and on top of that..is there anyway to set up a slave drive?...

nvm was messin with it and found where to permanently install it...but how do I set up a slave drive?

    and one more thing..haha..sorry...

I have an ethernet card...with a cd with the drivers on it..would I be able to just pop in the cd and load the drivers?...or do I need to do something that I don't know how to do yet?

Linux does not configure internal Hard drives like Windows. When you hook up your drives Linux will display it a one contiguous filesystem. Once you have connected the additional drive use either gPartEd or QtPartEd to partition and format the drive.

Now to your CD Burning problems. When creating a Linux bootable CD, always burn 'Disc at Once' otherwise you will have errors.

well, now I have the problem of my hard drive even letting me load ubuntu..

it gives me random errors...over and over.

If you are receiving random errors during the installation process, there are 2 possible causes:
    1. The installation media is corrupt.
    2. There is a problem with hardware. Either the CD drive, HDD, or Controller is bad or about to go bad. You can also check your drive cabling and make sure it is connected properly.
