Humans Need To Name Stuff

one last item that has been knocking around in the back of my mind for many moons now...

us humans, if we can see it, we will give it a name. yet, no one over the last 1500 years or so, has bothered to give our solar system a name. there's only one universe that we know of, so "universe" is a good enough name. we named our galaxy the milky way, and we formed committees to give a name to every single space rock that we can spot. 'earth' is also a nice name for our planet. but, our home solar system, where we live, is not named anything.... those medieval popes missed out on a prime chance for immortality :) and trying to get a name resolution through those committees would be next to impossible now a days.

i don't even know why i care. i basically assume that when we are finally discovered by an alien race, we will just be conquered and colonized, and they will give our solar system some gawd awful name that we can not pronounce, and we will lose part of our identity as humans.

a local college radio show, that i used to listen to, called this week in science, was(is?) co-hosted by kirsten sanford, easy to listen to, and can explain complex subjects in such a fashion that even i can understand. as i was thinking about a good name for our solar system, kirsten sounded like a good name, so we could be from the planet earth, in the kirsten solar system, found in the milky way galaxy. that has a nice ring to it.

    ok, ummm, nevermind :)

    Great idea!
I'm thinking something to honour Nicolaus Copernicus.

But, to do that today will be an impossible mission.

In latin the name of our planet is Terra, and the name of the sun is Sol. In fact, the name Milky Way is also derived from the latin name "Via Lactea" . . . which means “The road of milk.” The English language leans heavily on Latin . . . I'd be surprised if other languages didn't have their own derived names for these things.

I find etymology and onomastics to be fascinating. There was a time in my misspent youth where I considered going into some form of linguistics.

Me too. Every single episode. Some more than once. I even once, many eons ago, on my TRS-80, copied and ran the entire StarTrek game. Took forever to write all that out in BASIC on a disk.

Its like a quote I read once "You are just a speck of dust in the universe. If you understand the context of your existence, you will naturally become silent." its apt I feel...

OMG love PITA, had it lastnight, have some left for lunch today.

can imagine legalese is worse that our medical stuff, one drug we use Eylea (nice easy name rolls off tounge) NO real drug name Aflibercept, not so bad to pronounce daily, but Lucentis (again nice name) the real drug name Ranibizumab.

I know current naming convention is to alphabetically name storms, ok that's good, but weird weather folk understanding of alphabet is we went in UK from Ophelia to Brian!

Me too. (I must try that recipe!)

Ah...Nope. Still trying to unravel my tongue after attempting to pronounce those medical terms you noted above...

Reckon "Medicalese" hands down is far worse than "Legalese"

I'd have to go with Sol or Terran System. Somehow the "Wacke System" would make some sense these days...

Likely so on the Storms but the UKs had a few and pretty sure we should be past "B" by now.

    OK they change them yearly.....

Hahaha on the drug names, me too in meetings I refer to the easy generic over the actual drug name, or as they are all Anti-VegF drugs, just say treat with Anti-VegF )
I still love oculus dexter and oculus sinister as right and left eye, your left eye is the evil sinister one!!! (never trust someone who winks with left eye!)

When talking about UK,I think you must remember at some time, our UK English sort of meandered over to the US,now usually referred to as American English when setting up an operating system.
So, we must have special licence to teach u lot proper Engish (purposely spelt that way)
How else would you know that sometimes B comes before O - like Bu...r Off, or, Blast Off-(going to the moon)
Just thought a little edumacation might be relevant here:)o_O
