Hung Processes that are preventing Installations

    Alright, here is the Deal..

I am using a Windows Xp SP2 Computer.

AS I stated in the title of the thread, I am having a problem with Hung Processes, And whenever I go to install popular software, such as Firefox and Winamp, they get to the actuall installation part and the process that is installing (In firefox's case "Setup.exe") begins to hang completly. It hangs to the point that when you go into task manager and try to end process, it does no good, Neither does ending Process Tree, or restarting Explorer.exe. Whilst this Irremovalble process is running, it is impossible to shutdown, logoff, or exit the installer. Another note that is I am able to install things that use the default installer such as Audacity and Teamspeak 2.

Another hung process that is impossible to remove, is War3.exe, Which belongs to the computer game Warcraft 3: The frozen thorn. It is impossible to remove this process, and when you go to play the game after this is already running, it will create another one. The first War3.exe does absolutly nothing, but it can not be ended.

I have scanned my system several times, and have yet to find anything, I am tempted to scan again tonight.

Here is a screen shot of my Task manager, the last time I tried to install Firefox 1.5.

I labeled them according to wheither or not it can be ended and how it came to be.

Any help at all will be appreciated... I WANT TO INSTALL AGAIN!

IF this is not windows 2000, then try the following:

Click START, then RUN, then type in msconfig (press enter).

Select the radial button "Selective startup".

    Uncheck "Load startup items".

Press, OK, then yes to reboot. Do you still have issues installing Firefox?

Also, instead selecting "Selective startup", you can go to the startup tab. Then uncheck war3.exe or any other process you deem necessary.

War3.exe does not start on start up.

I am more concerned about what is causing these things to freeze up.

Did, you try my suggestion of NOT loading anything on startup?

I am a little nervouse to do so actually...

What all happens when I unselect it?

Then nothing on startup, loads. This is basically a step in troubleshooting what running process is causing you issues.

Nothing bad will happen, except that any firewall or antivirus (that doesn't require a service) will not run.

I tend to do this frequently in your situation.

    HI!
Have you tried using system restore to go back to a time BEFORE this all started?
    I would try that, myself.
    It MIGHT help.

Actually, I share this computer withsomeone who could care less about this problem, but DOES care about using system restore... So.. That is kind of out of the question... And before you suggest it, no, I don't have enough money to buy a new computer.

Well, system Restore is a wonderful thing when stuff like this happens, but to each his own.
I had no intentions of suggesting the purchase of a new computer when the 'old' computer is 'fixable'
    :)

The real problem is that I don't know what the problem is.. So the only thing I can really do is explain it...

    Maybe somthing got corrupt...

(I just scanned my system with Avg free with the latest Deffiintions. Trend Micro doesnt seem to want to work either...)

Should I post a Hijackthis log?

Go to the Malware Forum and go thru the steps, I know that the Sasser Worm can cause symptoms "similar" to that.

But don't just concentrate on that, follow all the removal procedures you can. If you have problems or can't install something just tell them. Also be sure to run the online scans.

I Scanned with Active Scan from Panda soft, It told me I had to potention Hacker tools, both were moddified Registries. Which were both just a couple of crap tool bars for an internet browser I could care less about (IE). Other then that, there were just a few stupid Spyware hidden in cookies.. Nothing that could modify my system to hate me though...

It must be an internal problem.

I don't know how to access Safemode to be honest...

And I am a bit nervouse about it... What's all differnent in Safe mode?

(I am using an HP computer, incase that helps in anyway...)

Reboot the computer. Just after the POST screen, hit F8. Or hold down the left CTRL key.

When a menu shows up, select Safe Mode with the arrow keys.

I know this would be kicking a dead topic, but I just want to thank you so very much... After long debate and fear of the unknown, I decided to go into safe mode this morning, and shockingly enough to me, both Firefox 1.5 and Winamp 3 installed!!!

I just want to thank everyone who suggested it, I just got a whole lot happier!

You guys rock, I am coming here from now on, when I need support.
