I just saw an interview with the Admiral they have put in charge down there.

I bet they get stuff done now, he was very impressive, a take-charge kind of guy.

That was a good move by the Administration. :)

yeah from what I read he is in charge of the Coast Guard who were superb throughout the terrible disaster.

I do think the administration were caught out big time with this disaster... miss interpreted the full extent of the size of this disaster! TBH I thought FEMA was ment to be the specialists in these sorts of events sadly they failed the public.

I'm also ? like you BOOMM

with the best planning in the world, we are nieve to think we can account for all posibilities, even if steps were taken to prevent a tragic disaster as this, they MAY not have still been enough to stop the force of nature prevailing.

So what were the ones shooting at the rescue choppers thinking? SO pleading for help entails looting a TV!

And those who were not busy looting were not merely pleading for help. They were angry.

I'm angry too. and I'm not black, I'm not poor (well i suppose i am) and i don't come from there. not all people looting were stealing T.V.s. most were taking food, water, diapers, etc. so the welfare state has created a group of individuals that rely on the government to look after them? couldn't possibly prejudice, lack of opportunity, education, decent housing, and respect could it? aloha

Not all poor people lack morality, nor do all those who are better off or rich have any more or less morality then those less fortunate. People are people, and people are different. I don't think anyone faults those who were looking for food or medical supplies. I believe the term looter has been largely leveled at those who are stealing the TV's and the designer jeans, etc. I think the people shooting at rescue personnel are and should be labeled terrorists.
The problem with the relief response, at least in LA, began first with the State and local authorities - who totally fell down on the job - secondly with FEMA. People forget also that this is the largest natural disaster to hit the U.S., and the Big Easy has some unique characteristics that give it some unique problems.
I think anger is energy wasted, and would be better spent in finding ways to alleviate the situation. Just my thoughts.

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

Red Cross was awfully lax about making sure who they were "helping". They're uncovering a lot of people here in the Memphis area that either weren't evacuees getting money, or evacuees going back multiple times. Probably pretty widespread, and literally millions mis-handled.

It happens everytime we get on the bandwagon for helping others. One reason I will not contribute to the Red Cross.

I don`t mean to detract from the disaster that was Katrina, but I wonder about the reasons that people choose to live where the potential for horrific disaster is a part of every hurricane season. There are many places in the USA where there are natural disasters. That includes the north, where just about every winter there is a blizzard or ice storm of some sort that disrupts, and yes, causes the loss of life. Let us not forget the earthquake parts of this country. Point is, blizzards and earthquakes are spotty....don`t happen that often on a (fiction here)biblical proportion...but when it does the people in those particular places seem to be somewhat prepared....like they know that it may happen...and for the most part, of course the HUGE earthquake areas are an exception, as it`s a hit and miss thing...for the most part they deal with it. I might at this point, point to the "Pet Peeve' thread. Recently there was HUGE blizzards and ice storms up north...in the plains states. Ya know what those people did? They got into thier canned goods(set aside for this sort of thing)and thier woodpiles for the woodstoves(for this sort of thing)and dressed in thier warmest clothes(for this sort of thing)to dig out thier cars and houses. I guess my point is...be prepared. Expect the worst. Again, I`m not trying to belittle the horror of Katrina, and the loss of property and life. On the other hand, choose where you live wisely, and DONOT blame officials who are overwhelmed for you not having enough sense to be ready. I sincerely hope that anyone affected in ANY way by Katrina recovers to the best of thier ability. Natural disasters are a part of life no matter were you may live. It`s up to you to be ready.

That's true. All the things the relief organizations were giving out is exactly what they told people to get (have on hand) before the hurricane.

Yeah, that's great advice. Let's see, we can rule out Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas due to hurricanes, Oklahoma and Texas due to fires; Colorado and Wyoming due to avalanches; California due to the fact it's just flat falling into the ocean; the entire northeast because it snows; New Mexico, Arizona and California because they border Mexico; Minnesota because their entire pro football team are perverts; Kansas because of tornadoes; Idaho, Montana and both Dakotas because they are boring; New Jersey because of the mafia; Hawaii because of the tsunami potential; and Illinois, because it has the highest percentage of successful female corporate presidents. Alright, everyone shoehorn into West Virginia.

    @ Matacumbie ...good point

@Star ...my point was, and I guess I was remiss in not making my point...I`m a little bit sore at the folks that aren`t prepared, and digging into everyone`s pockets for thier resurrection. I have absolutely no problem helping people that need help, my problem is helping people that aren`t ready to help themselves. And. let`s be honest, if you live in an area that is prone to natural disasters you can expect natural disasters. If you do, don`t rely on people that ARE prepared, to bail you out because while they are dealing with thier own problems, at great expense(and fore-sightedness)they have to take care of thier own. It sickens me at times to hear that this country isn`t taking care of thier own when the very people that are in trouble, had they made preparations just in case...did so themselves. I don`t mean to offend but for goodness sakes it`s not just the south that has problems...and prepearation, and readiness, is the key. Ask those folks in Minnesota and the Dakotas how they prepare for Mother Nature, on thier own, without blaming the government for thier destruction. :)

@Star...Minnesota`s football team is an inner-city issue I`m thinking...and believe me the sarcasm isn`t lost on me.
