Hyper-v Or Vmware?

    Hello again,
Now that I'm getting happier with Windows 10 64 bit on my machine that was running 32 bit XP I have come to a quandary.
I understand that printer manufacturers have decided not to update drivers to increase sales.
My Canon pixma ip6000d does work in Windows 10 but not the canon printing software which just doesn't recognise the printer.
My thought is to create a virtual disk with my old XP sp3 disk using the same serial number that I used before converting to windows 10. Would this work?

I have been looking around and have found people having difficulty connecting their host USB printers to their guest system in Vmware.
Or should I have a deeper look into Hyper-v?

Alternatively any good recommendations for freeware printing software?

    Best wishes,
    s.

I run an XP SP3 VM in VMWare Player primarily to be able to run an ancient Epson flatbed scanner. My HP Printer USB attached to the host works fine in the VM providing I DON'T attach it to the VM, the opposite of what you would expect.

Thank you Eldon, When I run the Canon printing software a notification error box appears saying that a Canon printer couldn't be detected even though it is there in Settings>Printers and Scanners.
Thank you Earthling, Would you suggest I have a go with
Hyper-v and see how the USB printer works.
I will have to do a little more research.
Can I use the same serial number for XP pro sp3 that used to run on the desktop?
    Thanks again,
    s.

I can't comment meaningfully on Hyper-V as I've had no reason to try it. VMWare Player is just one brilliant bit of software and I have every version of Windows from 98SE to Win 10 set up in it. You will just have to try XP to see if it installs and activates - there isn't any other way to know. I'm pretty sure my old XP key was re-used in the VM and worked OK.

Thank you E, Got caught up in the Hyper-V setup process. Uninstalled it at downloaded VMWare player. Installation quick and easy. Still a little confused how to view the host folders from the guest OS?
Copied them onto a USB drive but there is probably an easier way.
    regards,

Yes, there is. Player > Manage > Virtual Machine Settings > Options > Shared Folders and select the enabled setting you want and Add. Sounds like your XP has installed and activated. Does your printer work now?

Thank you Earthling. The printer is running like it should. Must get some more inks...
Got to find my network places and then all sorted.
    Kindest wishes and many thanks,

Sure you want XP online? I'm using a Host Only connection, just so I can scan and print.

Perhaps you are right. But got MSE installed and now I can relax. Sorted the shared network stuff but the virtual machine is only using a single processor. I'm quite happy.
Going downstairs to watch a DVD with Her downstairs...
    Good night.

You can change that in the XP VM settings. Close XP first.
