i am being bombed off the internet

I need some advice please

at certain specific times I am being knocked off the internet,
my router goes nuts with unwanted traffic and i lose my connection,

the router is a netgear ADSL modem router DG834G v3,
the OS in WinXP SP2

what i am wanting is advice on how to "monitor" the traffic in real time and identify the IP source of the attack and the "weight" of the attack

many eons ago i used a piece of software that displayed a real time graph similar to the performance display in widnows task manager,

but basically anything that can show me who and how "heavy" in real time
