Hi all, I am having problems with my windows XP this problem occured when I was using yamicsoft winxpmanager, to remove some unwanted explorer items. Now I don't have the 'open' command anymore! And yes I have already tried to use an earlier restore point, but to no avail...

I would really need some help here, maybe someone knows the location in the registry that I'm missing. This problem also affects other programs, like 7zip and winrar, I am now unable to use for example 'extract here', which is causing of alot of trouble...

Are these entries that are missing in the right click context menu?

If so and you are running Windows XP Home, sp2, open regedit and navigate to:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\Shell\Open\Command

    The "Default" value should read:

    %SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe/idlist,%I,%L

    Yes, and they are!

There must be another key that is missing, as I alrady have the above key...

And the explorer is working as it is supposed to when working with folders, but not with files!

I mean, I can still see the 'extract here' command from winrar, but nothing happens when I click it!

But I can NOT see the 'open' command for any file, and also not the 'burn with imgburn' which I used to have for my .iso files!

There is also a registry key that called HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/file/CLSID

    Where my default is: {00000303-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

    Is this correct??

BTW I am using using Windows XP Professional.

    **bump**

Hello everybody, is no one having a solution for me??? I don't want to reinstall my windows + all my drivers and servicepacks...

I have even installed SP3 RC2, in hopes of that it would resolve my problems, but it didn't, and as I said before, no restore points work!

Try uninstalling and reinstalling winrar and 7zip. If you get those functions back then we'll tackle the other.

Yes that is what I have done...

    But, again, to no avail!

    Try this:

Right click on the link below and select "Save target as".

    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_fileassoc.zip

Extract the file to your desktop.

Run the .bat file by double clicking on it. This batch file will restore all the default file associations XP ships with.

    See if this helps.

    No man that didn't help...

To clarify my problem: I don't see the 'open' command when I am rightclicking on any file in windows explorer!

Let me ask you this about the context menu. Is there a blank space where "Open" should be?

Does the context menu appear to be "cut off" and the first entry is in bold print?

Did the program yamicsoft winxpmanager place and entry on the context menu.

Have you installed any programs recently that have placed entries in the context menu?

No, but everything works now again!!

    This is what I did:

In winxpmanager I just cleared all the Items, then I reinstalled my programs, and now it is there!!

I can now choose both 'open', and also 'extract here' , and even for my .isos the 'burn with imgburn' has appeared!! I am very happy now!

...And thank you for all your help!!!

Glad you were able to find the fix. Thanks for posting how you did it. I'm keeping this one in my notes :)
