i crushed my girlfriends laptop... an older sony vaio model pcg-8n2m. in one respect i got lucky in that the hard drive survived undamaged... so... i know i can get the little USB cases for them but i have never been able to boot from one of those and , as such can not run any of the executables...

so... this hard drive is a hitachi hitachi ic25n060atmr04-0. does anyone know of a compatable sony chassis or ANY chassis for that matter that i could install this in and have her have her lap top back and functioning as it was ? or i will listen to any reasonable alternative solution

feel free to contact me directly at <snip> i am seriously desperate.

Here's a Craigslist search engine: just type in Sony Vaio and hit Search and it will list all Sony Vaio's on all Craigslists nationwide. Seems to me the best bet for finding one quick & cheap. Plus you'll end up with a spare drive after the smoke clears & dust settles.

i looked at e bay ( over 40,000 vaios listed) and craigs list (similar) the problem is that this is an older one from 03 and i have no idea which, if any of those listed are compatible or have the same bios. that is the focus of my question. but thx anyway

Was it crushed accidentally or on purpose?:confused
If an accident, she might be willing to accept a newer machine as a replacement.;)
If deliberate, your title says it all.rolleyes

accidentally but that, again, is not the issue. would gladly buy her a new machine but the issue is making ANY new machine have exactly and precicsely what is on the old hard drive exactly as it is the way it is. there is old software on there that can not be replaced etc etc.

so... if you know how to ghost or mirror the old hard drive exactly as it is onto a new hard drive including the operating system and all else, , then thats a perfectly good solution. or as i originally asked, if you know of a compatable vaio platform for this hard drive, then thats good too

Was the model number of her machine totally obliterated? I'd say the obvious is to select items from Craigslist that are the identical model number, which may be gotten from System Information. Ask seller what hard drive is in their machine, which can be found in their Device Manager. I wouldn't mention which drive you are looking for to taint their response.

This allows 2 benefits: first, you'd know if the machine they offer actually works at basic levels, and second you find out the exact compatibility. Also a seller that won't provide that simple info has something to hide. Overall it shouldn't be too difficult to find what you need, cheap.

i am well aware of that and have explored that option to the end of the earth but hey... if its that easy, the model number is PCG-8N2M find one , add 50$ to the price for yourself and i am happy to buy it in working condition

I have removed the offensive post. :major

I would start by calling all the local computer repair shops in your area. They may be able to steer you in the right direction. My other consideration is to check that your hard drive will fit into a newer laptop. Is it a standard IDE 2.5" drive?

Edit: You might also consider getting an external enclosure for the drive.

Just to update, I have checked ebay and only found parts. I think trying to replace with the exact same model will be very difficult to do.

I would be more inclined to get a new laptop and an enclosure so that you can partition the new machine and ghost the image into a separate partition.

My mistake I guess, I was simply trying to help you in your quest. Maybe the sense of humor was missed in my last post?
