I am stumped. IE7 does not work, Firefox does

I got a call from my Dad saying his computer was messed up. I ran the basic Adaware, Spybot, AVG scans, found some spyware, but nothing major. But now IE7 will not connect to the web. Firefox works great. From CMD, I cannot ping www.yahoo.com, google, or cisco using the www and . com/net on them.

So, network problem of some kind that you can think of, or should I head to the malware removal section?

He has XP Pro, Socket A Athlon 2800 or so CPU with an Asus mobo. He mentioned something about a proxy, so he may have farfed around with some settings and is not telling me.

How can I not ping sites, but still get on the web with Firefox? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

so what did he say about a proxy? thats kind of significant. if hes using a proxy, sometimes autodetect dosnt work. go into tools-internet settings-connections-lan settings. check the proxy box and put in the IP and Port of your proxy. thats just telling it that there is a proxy and to use the specified ip and port.

if you cant ping, it might just be something blocking ICMP packets. that might be the case if you can get online with firefox. trial and error. get back if you still have problems

 

personally i dont see the issue here, if firefox works and ie7 dont, thats only possibley a good thing! :major i-CONICA :major

Well, he got it fixed before I stopped by. Turns out it was a firewall issue. I should have caught that, but was confused that Firefox worked and IE did not, and I got no warnings from the firewall. Live and learn.
