I broke my dvd tray!

Hi, I have the UK acer aspire 5920g, and you know those flimsy rails on the dvd tray? Well, I managed to snap them clean in two in an accidentally-opening-the-drive-when-putting-it-under-the-sofa debacle. My question is, what can I replace it with? I removed the drive and it is a toshiba TS-L802A but I can’t find a direct replacement in the UK unless I get a used one from ebay. Is there an alternative (that doesn't cost the earth?) It doesn't have to be HD like the old one, just needs to play regular dvds, games etc.

I’m a novice, so sorry if this is a daft question!

    Thanks :)

Is there no-one out there who can help? I know these things aren't universal and I'd rather replace it myself than send it off to be repaired - I'm too poor. Having said that, I'd rather replace it with a new one from a reputable place than get a used one from ebay.

    Please help!

    Hi Bex,

Today they are pretty universal. Just find one with the same features or the features you like. Burners may like their own drivers but a driver usually comes with the drive. Even without drivers you will still have the reader as Windoze has that covered. Also get IDE if that's what the old one is. Sata if that's it.

    Good Luck, Jim

    Hi

Sadly as you have a laptop in the ACER Aspire 5920g they are not universal as you already know and laptops CD drives are proprietory as they need to conform to the design of the case, so I would have a chat with this company as they helped me a few years back with a keyboard for a Compaq so may be have available a Cd Drive for your PC.

    Hi again Bex,

Sorry. I'm navigating on one eye at the moment. Missed the fact that it was a laptop altogether.

You can always get an external drive................

ralph3124, the problem with an external optical drive is that a laptop sometimes will not boot from a USB device so if windows needs to be reinstalled, it can't be done. At that point, the owner must install an internal device because with no floppy drive and a non-working CD/DVD drive, there isn't a way to repair nor reinstall the OS.

I was researching a year or two ago, optical notebook drives. I do know that some have straight fronts and some have curved fronts.

Perhaps if you search for the same brand and as close a model as you currently have, it will have the proper type faceplate.
Sorry, I don't know if all the connectors are the same; I'm not even sure if there are SATA optical drives now.

Look at this thread does it appear your drive uses this adapter?

Nope, as far as I am aware there is no adapter, it just plugs straight in.
Thanks for all your help so far guys!

It is all so confusing, I found that this is the successor to my drive: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Toshiba-S..._Storage_CD_DVD_Drives_ET?hash=item3ca5b892ae

but would it fit? Does it matter that the Rom Ver. is different? Does HP05 mean it was made to fit an HP laptop and therefore would it be unlikely to fit my acer (rom Ver. AC05)? Would the whole thing be unlikely to fit, or just the bezel? And can I just swap the bezel from my old drive and 'make' it fit?

Feeling a bit of a dunce here guys. Probably because I am one :cry

I have a laptop with one of those, and would never recommend it to anyone. The external drive tends not to work well unless horizontal, not to mention the USB connection is slow. The OP said he/she wants the drive to be able to play game discs... so an external is out of the question. If nothing else, with externally hooked up peripherals, a lot of the portability of a laptop goes away.

Bex, it's hard to say if the one you found will fit or not without knowing the exact dimensions. I'd suggest just measure your old one and compare to the one on eBay. Also, of course, make sure that it uses the same kind of connectors as your old one. The one on the eBay page you linked to is an IDE/ATAPI so if your old one is, that should work. If you're uncertain, find out the seller's return policies and make sure you can return it before spending money.

    Definitely a she :)
Yep, I've got an external and it's pretty cumbersome for a laptop! It's ok for the now, but in the long run I need an internal drive.

Thanks Mimsy, I'll get my tape measure out.
    P.s. I need a life.

    Noted. :-D

Bah, nonsense. Life without a computer to game on is... well, boring sort of begins to hint at it. :)

Don't forget to check the connectors, just to make sure. They should be IDE/PATA, but assumptions are the beginnings of disasters when working on computers. Always verify. :)

Haha, Mimsy - I need a life because I (word by word) translated your Drow footer :-D I just had to know what it said!

You're right about gaming - I feel lost without it!

I tried laptopbits and they quoted £95 +Vat or £220 +Vat so I think I'm going to go with the one I found on ebay. The connections are right and I should be able to change the bezel if that's a problem (right?)

    Thanks everyone,
    Bex

Thanks Bex for mentioning the word, Drow. That's all I needed (also a she) to find a translation site Drow to Common. Aha, finally the light went on :-D and I learned what Mimsy has been trying to communicate.
What can I say, I have a life...it is sitting at the computer. ;) It doesn't pay (I'm retired) but it is more brain expanding and I'm continually learning so it sure beats sitting in front of the tv.

Wish you much success in getting the new optical drive in.

First off, the proper name is "ilythiiri", thank you very much. Second, it doesn't count if you have to google for a translator in order to understand it. :p

Bex, you should be able to change the bezel without too much trouble, but if you end up needing to do that, take your time, be patient, and try not to break anything. ;)

I google EVERYTHING! I hate to think how really stupid I'd be if I couldn't google. roflmao

But the whole point of it gets lost if you don't understand it without help! :crybaby
