... I do have a genuine OS, XP home, but the ActiveX isn't popping up. It just goes to a "cannot display webpage" screen.

    Can someone please help. Thanks!

    Enable active X
Enabling Active X for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0
Click Tools and select Internet Options on the Internet Explorer menu bar.
Click the Security Tab and select the Internet Zone.
Click Internet to display the settings for the Internet Zone.
Click the radio button to select Custom (for expert users).
Click the Settings button to open the Security Settings window.
Scroll to the Active X controls and plug-ins and verify that the options are set to Enable or Prompt.
Scroll to the Scripting Section and verify that Active Scripting is set to Enable or Prompt.
Note: Clicking a checked box removes the checkmark and disables the feature.
If you see checkmarks in the Enable or Prompt boxes, do not click on the checked boxes.
Click OK to close the Security Settings window.
Click OK to close the Internet Options window.

Alternatively, if the above fails, you can also try and enable movies to be played in your explorer.
In Microsoft's Internet Explorer, this options is available under:
    Tools
    Internet Options
    Advanced
    Multimedia
then place a tick in the "Play movies in Internet Explorer" field.

If alternatively the above doesnt work, in which its always best to try and resolve an issue over a workaround,

you have this workaround below as we host this download, however if Genuine Advantage fails on you PC for any reason the install will fail and you will need to contact Microsoft, to advise you on that.

    Windows Defender

    Or ye could try, Dial-A-fix:
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4899

When ye extract and run dial-a-fix, simply check the box under "registration center".
    "Activex controls/codecs". Press go.

    Then try again.

Or, what I have been doing lately at work, is simply pressing the green check mark, and then pressing the go button. This will pop up a date/time dialog for you to make sure the date/time is set correctly. :)

I've found Defender to be a little bit flakey when it comes to downloading it from Microsoft and also with updates. It works great 93% of the time, but that other 7% will make ya nuts!!! It's still a great app!! And I still use it and recommend it highly. Yeah, real helpful post, yeah right ;) (sarcasm)

I may have found the real reason this is happening. At least, this was the case for me.

I went through a process of elimination and found the the thing stopping me from downloading Windows Defender was the SPYBOT S&D 1.5 ADD-ON. (The SDhelper which protects you from bad downloads). (I guess Win Defender is a bad download...LOL :)).

Anyway, I found two ways to work around this. One was to temporarily go in to IE settings and the Programs TAB and the "Manage ADD-ONs" and turn of both of the SPYBOT add-ons. After downloading Windows Defender I turned these back on.

The second (slower) way was to fire up SPYBOT S&D 1.5 and turn on advanced mode and go into TOOLS > RESIDENT and temporarily turn off the SDHelper.

However once one understands what is causing the problem (bad website design by M$ in my opinion) one can just leave these settings alone and use a third method I just realized works too. Just go further down the Windows Defender webpage. There is a second link to "Windows Defender" which seems to use a different mechanisim to kick off the verify/download process.

Still, it was nice to find out how to control this bizarre behaviour, and to find out WHY.

    EOF.
