i have a problem with my HL Data- Storage CD Rom drive. it's a GCE-8483B and when i went to put new memory in it i booted up the computer and when i went to run a disc that i needed i wasn't able to run it because my D:/ drive had disappeared. So i shut the computer down and replaced the wire from the motherboard to the Cd Rom drive and started up again still the same thing. The power does work on it i am unable to find it anywhere. i looked in BIOS and it told me that it wasn't installed i had a completely new cable put in there too. if someone can help me fix my issue that would be great
    Thanks.

Sounds like the drive is faulty now. Did you set the BIOS to default settings?

Welcome to MajorGeeks! First, I would carefully check and make sure the drive has the data cable connected properly. Sounds like you might have bumped something. If you can't find anything amiss in the case, pull out the new stuff and see if you can get it to work without the new RAM (like it was before you upgraded.)

Some system details would be nice to have also. I am assuming you upgraded your system RAM and now a CD drive does not work. Some info on the computer would be nice to have.

yes i did check the setting's in BIOS to see if that was the problem. i did replace the IDE Cable with a new one and i did take the memory out of it to make sure that it wasn't the memory upgrade it wasn't. the final thing that i tried was to take the disc drive out and put it into a new computer. it did work just fine now i don't know what it is. i have a few options left but i have to wait until the user on the computer isn't busy. the computer that i am working with is a Dell Dimension Desktop 4600 with 1.5 gb of RAM and a 40 gig hd with a 2.6gig p4 processor with win xp

yep but still no luck so i might just buy a new mother board i was on the dell chat with dell for two hours yesterday and they came to the conclusion that it was my motherboard that gave way so i was like ok then i'll have someone get me a new motherboard then so i might have the problem solved but i don't want to spend the extra money on a computer that i'm not going to use much longer
just keep this post open for future reference and if i figure out a way to fix it i will post to help those in need of such a problem fix it easily

I would check the pins on the motherboard where the ide cable connects, never really heard of just this going bad on mb's. I would also try another cable, maybe the one off of the pc that it worked in. ed

tunered please re-read the post before you do so i did put a brand new one in there not from another computer i ordered it and took it from the package and i did check the mobo for pins none of that works still like i said earlier i talked to dell and they want my money i mean they suggest me to get a new motherboard so i might do that but i don't use that computer that much for discs so i don't even know i have an external hooked up to it right now so that shouldn't be such a problem the cd drive on that thing gets used about once every month or so. not that much so i might just stick with the external when i need it or i can also just use my network from one computer to another shared the disc drive. that would be simple oh well it was just a problem that i had run into and was unable to solve and i found this site so i thought that i would share my common problems i guess it's not so common after all lol

As you at least have one IDE channel working, you could attach the CDROM to the same cable as the hard drive ( change CD jumper to slave), and although it will be a little slower, should allow you to use the device when wanted.

This would also determine whether the CDROM is faulty or not.:)

that is what i did i found a longer cable cuz i was back on the internet with dell again and they told me there wasn't any options to install drivers and it does work fine yes it is slow but it does work now i never thought it was really possible until told so and i had to try it out myself.

Glad to hear that the CDROM is working again! Now I'm curious as to whether the secondary IDE adapter shows any issues in Device Manager.:)
