I can't connect to the internet

    Hello,

Recently I had a problem with my computer where it would restart in normal mode at the point before the login screen where the Windows XP logo and loading bar appears. It would also restart in the same place when I selected the 'Last Known Good Configuration' option, and when I would enter safe mode once the minimum number of files had loaded. As I was unable to log into Windows using these three methods, I was pretty sure I would be unable to access the system restore point I created a few months ago. The only option I had left was to run Windows XP repair, but because I don't have the XP CD I had to take my computer to a local shop to get it repaired.

My computer is now repaired, but since I got it back I have a new problem in that I'm unable to connect to the internet (I'm using another computer in the house at the moment). We have a wireless internet setup, and when I put the dongle into one of the USB slots it doesn't light up. When I right-click the 'Wireless Network Connection 2' icon, which is in the bottom right of the screen and has a red cross in it, click 'Repair', after a while I'm told that Windows could not finish repairing the problem. When I right-click the icon again and select 'Open Network Connections', I'm presented with the following three options: '1394 Connection', 'Local Area Connection', and 'Wireless Network Connection 2'. The first option is enabled, I don't know why it's there, I don't remember seeing it before, and I suspect it's there as a result of the work that was carried out on the computer at the local shop. The second option is disabled, and I believe that is appropriate because this option was used at my old house where we had a wired internet setup. The third option is enabled, which is appropriate because we currently have a wireless internet setup, but it's not connected, and its icon has a red cross in it.

Please can someone let me know where to go from here in order to connect to the internet again. I would phone the shop and ask them for advice, but it's closed at weekends. If you need any more information please let me know. I hope to hear from someone soon.

    Thanks,

    Jack.

    Hi Jack

What is the make and model of the Wifi dongle you have?

In device manager do you have any yellow ! marks by any devices and if so what as I suspect that the Chipset driver is not been installed from repaid and this can cause some drivers like networking ones not to be recognised easily, so what is your make and model of PC if a DELL, HP etc or if a custom build what is the Motherboard make and model? as this will help us with any drivers that maybe needed.

can use the below and this log will tell us all we need to know

    Hello,

I ran Speccy on the computer I currently can't connect to the internet on, and I have attached the log. The images in the 'HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post' post aren't displaying on the laptop I'm currently using, which is a MacBook Air, so I had less information to go on and may have attached the file incorrectly, but I should have done it correctly. I don't know if the log contains information for everything you asked me for; please let me know if you need any further information. Thank you for your quick response.

    Jack
