As the Heading explains, I have some .tmp files I cannot delete. :cry
    See thumbnail.

They are in my C:\Windows\Installer sub-Folder and all are prefixed msi*****.tmp. They obviously relate to a Microsoft Installer.

I know they don't take up much room on my 500 gig hard drive, but that is not the point. I like to control what goes on in my PC, and keep my system .as clean as possible. ;)

All my regular housekeeping programs fail to remove these files.
Hope you can assist, one way or the other.

    Bazza

PS: I just went into the sub-Folder, checked the *.tmp files for deletion, and was warned that I have to be logged on as "Administrator" before I can delete them.

I'd like to know if these files are important for some other reason, before I delete them as "Administrator"

I assume you have tried Unlocker. You could open a command prompt as Administrator and navigate to the C:\Windows\installer folder and type "del *.tmp" no quotes (space between del and *). If that does not work, boot up with something like Puppy Linux or BartPE and delete them.

    Hi Bazza.

Just did a little research out of curiosity.

Here are a couple of things I found that may be worth reading:

Thanks for the links, mjnc. :cool I'll check them out.
What really annoys me is that they give NO indication as to what "program install" they relate to. They are labelled as *.tmp files, which, as you know, can normally be deleted with no ill effects.

    Thanks again,

    Bazza

I did check out your link to http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-211705.php, post #10

Thinking this over, again, they probably relate to installs, or updates, to Office 2000 which I deleted in favour of a more recent Open Office release.

It is a pity that MSFT decide to add the suffix of *.tmp to these files, IMO. Almost any other suffix, I think, would have been a better choice.

Next time I do a full backup of my C:\ drive, I MIGHT delete them. :-D

I also have a bunch of .msi files as well as .msp files with
Date Modified spanning a 4 year period.

There are also about 30 folders with long names like serial numbers.

Regardless of the .tmp suffix, you shouldn't do any manual deleting in the Windows folder. Anything in the %TEMP% folder is fine, but not in the %WINDIR%.

I have both also, mjnc. :cry :(
