I think I'm posting in the right place, if not I'm really sorry!

Anyways, right now I'm trying to network my two computers. One of them is a laptop running windows XP, and the other is a desktop running Windows 98 SE. I was told to use a USB cord to network them, so that's what I'm trying to do.

I already tried setting up a network on both the computers, and it doesn't work. The laptop with XP tells me to put a Windows XP or Network disc in the other computer if it's not using Windows XP (which it's not).. However, I do not have a Windows XP disc, because HP doesn't work that way I guess. I dont have a network one, either. It has the option to make one, but when I selected that it says I can't do so because I do not have a floppy drive.

On the desktop which is running windows 98, I've tried every which way to setup a network connection. It will act like its loading or installing something, but then it stops. After trying it another different way it asked for me to restart my computer, which I did. It didn't pop up anything nor does it show i have a network.

I'm sorry if I sound really stupid. I tried reading the book for windows 98 how to create a network, but it didn't give much information. I even tried looking it up...but couldn't find any answers relevant or helpful. And this computer did not come with a Windows XP book, or else I would read that for more help. If you can help me or tell me what's wrong, what I'm doing wrong, or anything I'd really appreciate it. Thanks,

    Sara

Are there ethernet cards on both computers? ....do you have internet access on both computers ...are they going through a router? .....

No, I don't have an ethernet card... I thought that was only to get wireless internet? Or at least thats how it was explained to me... And the only computer with a router is my laptop. I have internet access, but its dial up.

A router is not part of the computer. Its a device that is seperate and allows people to share internet

Okay, I'm sorry I misread what was asked. And the answer should've been no.
