    Asus P4P 800 SE, P4 Pescott 3.0E 2Gigs Ram(1Gig Kingston, 1Gig Crucial) 1 Maxtor 120Gig 1 Seagate 120Gig, Nvida 6600 AGP 256, Antec Case

I assembled this system in December 05, and it worked pretty well. Not a novice at building, but not a pro either. Apparently after this fiasco I'm a Klutz.
Finally after screwing around with my system, it looks like I finally destroyed the Mobo. I used a Thermatake TR12 for heatsink, and had pretty decent temps. Well I had to try one more time, and swaped in a Zalman 7000B cu. While removing the old HS they were tough with those clips, I brought in a long screw driver just to help dislodge the clip a little. Well it slipped, and raked the Mobo.
Oh Sh%# I said - Please tell me that didn't happen- but it did a second, and a third time, but I finally got the TR12 out. Put every thing back nice bead of AS-5. The Zalman fit perfect, hooked up the wires, powered the system, and no post or BIOS. Everything is working fans spinning HD's spinning lights, but I did some damage I think to the Mobo.
Anyway I fell like an idiot, but I would appreciate some feed back, if anyone has had similar experiences. Thanks for your help.

Well, for one thing, you're not an idiot!! We all make mistakes, especially when it comes to these machines. Trust me, I've made my share!! Anyhow, did you notice ANY damage around the area that your screwdriver hit? Cracks or chips? Any part of the circutry (sp?) damaged? When you re-installed the AS5, did you check your CPU first? Check for cracks in the die, or around the die itself. Granted, the CPU can take quite a bit of pressure, but if it was on as securely as you said, it may be possible that the CPU was damaged. Since this has never happened to me, I can only make suggestions as to what it could be.

I've done that, more than once in the past. Thats why I get ticked off when 3rd party HSF makers don't put in a lever like civilized companies. I have a Cooler Master Hyper 48 here that everytime I hook it up, it takes a decent size chunk of my hand. No avoiding it. I have scars that mark the history of how many times I've replaced it.

Hold everything, I just went in and took off the Zalman to doublecheck the seating and lo and behold the #$%#$@ processor came with it. So I'll redo everything, and keep you posted
Still not out of the woods yet.

Lol, i remember when I had this compaq and was first learning about hardware, I fried the memory, both the origional and the ones I was installing. I got so mad when I found out that static electricity fries chips (should have read the manual). Just took them out side and hooked some firecrackers up to them and boom. Quite lovely sight. Now thats an idiotic thing to do. All you did was make a mistake by slipping. Im sure everyone still loves you. :)

Here's what happened. I raked the screwdriver a couple of times, and lo thought my mobo was dead since I got no post. Went back to check the HS, and what happens the processor comes out with it. This is not good Isez to meself. Could it be my problem is the Preshott was not seated correctly. After care search for any damage or bent pins, I cleaned the sucker off, and reapplied AS5, and reinstalled the package. This time I made sure it was in good, and volia it's alive, and I'm back.

    Thanks everybody for the help.
Temps are a couple of degress lower, so I really need to check myself out.

Someone really should invent a tool for removing heat sinks. I've considered purpose converting one, but as it is, there's not really an easy way to do it.

Great to hear it works now.
