I don't like the sounds my external is making.

A few days back, I ran a defrag on my SeaGate external drive and noticed it was clicking. I remember on my old computer the Maxtor drive would make the same sounds on a defrag which I was told by a reputable person was the head moving back in place. I only noticed the sound during defrag and there were no freezing or access errors of any sort. I didnt notice any abnormal temperatures for the amount of time it had been running.

But people are saying that my external may be going. I ran the SeaTools, most of the tests on it, and they all passed.

I posted on the SeaGate support forum a day or two ago with no response yet. I will run this thing and post the results.

what do you guys think?

Sure don't like that clicking sound - not at all...

Have you tried CHKDSK 'x': /F /R yet, where 'x' is your external drive? Don't know if it'll work, but it's worth a shot...

 

Didn't think of that -- will try it. The drives still under warranty and I have all the reciepts and stuff ready if i need to return it.

 

Glad you've still got the paperwork - I don't care if the drive can jump through hoops: if it's clicking, then something ain't right...

 

If it is still under warranty, I wouldn`t even`t think twice about it, save yourself some future grief, it needs to be replaced.

 

The chkdsk is taking forever, but its a large drive. 500gb. However it feels pretty hot to the touch and this isnt good. Didnt notice any noises so far.
