I have used this site a little but now starting to get serious. So I thought I should come here and say hello.

I really appreciate all the hard work that has gone in to making this site what it is today. My goodness, a lot of good folks are here; doing good deeds for others like me.

My quandary is on some pinned info I read.

If I understand correctly: We should not use an Administrator account as our daily account because it makes it easier for malware and virus, etc to attack. OK, I can believe that to be true.

So I opened a new account, and gave it less privileges.

Now most of my programs won't run. They say they need administrative privileges.

What about my administrative account, where software says it still needs more privileges?

Why won't the software share from user to user?

Or How can I, if I wanted to?

I'm think I am missing something? maybe alot!!!!
    :)

Ok. I saw that on my friend's vista computer
My vista says run as... and then opens to a list to pick.

Ok what about XP on my other friends computer?

and what about sharing programs with users? It seems some do and some don't.

On the ones that don't, it doesn't like another copy on the computer either. Any way to ask a program to share?

Tell us what version of windows you are running. Xp and Vista work differently so we need to know which of the two you are using.

If you installed the program(s) from an administrator's account and made them available for all users, then you will be able to run what was installed.

    Thanks for your reply.

I am working on my friends computer and she has XP.

I have XP on my desktop and vista on my laptop.

If it is possible could we start with XP and then move to
    Vista?

I thought I always answered all users when I was asked. But maybe I missed it. However, it seems unlikely I would miss it every time. But if I did, do I need to reinstall all the programs?

What if the install does not ask me? Or is that not possible? :-o

My problem with run as... on XP, it asks for the password for with every program not just a some. so it makes no sence to me. Why have a limited account, if nothing will run without extra priviledges?

In XP, right-click on the program you want to run and choose "Run As" (if the option is there). Then type the username of the administrator into the run as box, and click "Check Names". Then see if the name has changed to be underlined, with the computer name in front of it, like this: \\computer name\Administrator Name. Obviously the "computer name" and "administrator name" will have the appropriate values for your computer. Then click OK.

Note: I am unsure if any of the above is correct, as I am working from a rather old memory. Thank you for your patience.
