I don't want itunes to open!

I use BearShare to download music. After a music file is done downloading, I have it set up so it will automatically go to a folder I've named "My Downloads". As soon as the file goes into that folder, itunes automatically opens and adds the music file to it's library. I hate that:mad: I've stopped the process called itunes helper, because I thought that was it, and I did hijack this and found an item in the hijack this log with "itunes helper" in there. So I checked it and clicked the "fix" button, but itunes still opens automatically when I download music. Can't find anything in itunes preferences. What do I do!

    Start>Run
    type in "services.msc"
Then look for the itunes service and disable it
    Cheers

Thanks, Blades! I think I'm on the right track now, but I don't see the service or the service I think I should disable. I see iPodservice, but pretty sure I shouldn't disable that one. Do you know what service it is that causes itunes to automatically open and then add the music file I just downloaded to it's library? Another clue....If I have BearShare open and iTunes is open, too (because it automatically opened and the file I just downloaded was automatically put in it's library), and I try to exit iTunes, I get this message. "One or more applications are using the iTunes scripting interface. Are you sure you want to quit?" screen shot below.

I don't get this message everytime I exit iTunes. It's only after iTunes has already automatically opened and added my newly downloaded file to it's library. I guess the real problem here is that I don't want iTunes to automatically open and add files to it's library. Like I said before..can't find anything in iTune's preferences to stop this.

I think we're getting to the bottom of this now :) Thanks

ipodservice should be it, try disabling that

I stopped ipodservice and then downloaded a music file. When the file was done downloading it went into my download folder like it's supposed to. As soon as it went into my download folder "ipodservice" restarted itself, iTunes opened and the newly dowloaded file was right there in the iTunes library. Maybe this is just something I'll have to live with? :(

double click on the ipod service, then change start type to disabled, then stop it and try again.

Why install a third party program when windows does it on its own just as well.

disabled "iPodService", stopped it too, downloaded some music, music file went to my download folder, it took a little while and iTunes did open and the newly downloaded file was in iTunes library. iPodService was still stopped and of course still disabled after all of this. Something is talking to something here when a music file is added to my computer. In this case it's BearShare downloading the file and putting it in my download folder. As soon as that music file gets downloaded, iTunes opens and adds the music file to it's library. I'm actually trying to justify this annoying feature of iTunes and just accept it, but the only files I want in my iTunes library are the ones I choose. I don't like the idea of iTunes doing it for me. I go through the iTunes' preferences again. Anyone else know why this is doing this?

Do you really need ITunes installed on your pc. All the hassle can be stopped by simply uninstalling it.

    Open I-Tunes, Edit, Preferences, Store,
    uncheck "Play songs after downloading"

    That should do it

Only for songs from the iTunes Store, not Bearshare. Uncheck "Add songs automatically to iTunes Library".

Guy with problem here....I'm all for finding another way to add music to my iPod so I could uninstall iTunes. Maybe I could just drag files into my iPod using windows explorer, but frankly I'm not ready to get rid of iTunes because I do like how you edit music file tags in iTunes. Does anyone use something else to edit their tags? Oh yeah....I don't see a check box for "Add songs automatically to iTunes Library". in preferences. Maybe I have an old version. After I post I'll completely remove iTunes and install the newest version.

I figured it out. Like "Just Playin" was trying to tell me. He said to uncheck "Add downloaded songs to iTunes library" in BearShare . I thought he meant in iTunes. I never thought that BearShare would have a setting just for iTunes:rolleyes:. In BearShare you go to the Setup menu and there it is "iTunes...". Thanks "Just Playin". You are a Major Geek:).
