I.E. 8 using too much ram

Hi folks
Newbie here looking for some advice.I have just upgraded my AVG free edition to the 2012 edition.Since this was done it has brought to my attention that I.E.8 is using too much ram.1GB at one point last night.I only have 2GB of ram so this is a major problem causing crashes and freezes.I can't upgrage the ram as my motherboard only supports 2GB.
Now what i've tried so far is deleted all history,cookies etc i have run in safe mode

spybot search and destroy
Malwarebytes
Superantispyware
Spywareblaster
cc cleaner

In the order they appear in the list
I have also disabled all the addons but without success
Any suggestions would be helpfull
Basic info on my system is

Windows xp home version 2002
Service pack 3
intel core quad q6600 @2.4GHz
2GB RAM
NVIDIA GEFORCE 7300 SE/7200GS

First try this to see if the memory usage is decreased.

From the Start button -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

This forum thread will explain how to get a list of the Add-Ons installed.

The process uses Startup List (MG download link).

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools -> Manage Add-Ons

Also, if you have not already done so, Uninstall Java and go HERE to download and save the latest version.

After install, go to Verify Java Version.
