    Well Happy Monday All!

Here I am at a decision time and I needed some additional input before I impliment my plan. I have been on Internet Explorer 8 for the past few months and although it has represented no problems from my User end it has run into some Site difficulties of which are causing me problems... so much so that I am giving serious contemplation to rolling back to V.7 ... What I want to know is what will I be facing if I attempt to reinstal 7 over 8? Am I going to incur nightmares heretofor unimagined??

Scary proposition. What Advice will You Big Boy's Offer?

    Am I suicidal??!

    Thanks Much :drool

    Hello MidRange.

Have you tried to view the websites using Compatibility View:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/features/easier.aspx

    (See Compatibility View)

I would suggest trying IE in that first, to see if it still is not looking the same. If it aint at that point, I understand your frustration. :( But as far as a roll back, it should be "difficult."

Hello MidRange, try Elder_Usr's suggestion first, and if that doesn't help ya, and you still want to 'roll back' to 7, here is how to do it:

Go to Add & Remove programs > Remove IE8> Reboot. You should be back to IE7. No, no fireworks, no cannonballs, you should be fine... You will just revert back to whatever IE version you were using before installing IE8. Hope this helps ya too. ;)

Now you've really got me confused... I went to your suggested referral and it spoke of Web Slices and not of Compatability... Please explain before I revert to an E-1

Well Troopers, I did attempt using Compatability View... No Cigar... Now I have to weigh whether it really is worth rolling back... I need to sleep on that ... but then at least as to The SSgt's admonition I will find the procedure not as painful as I thought. Thanks for the Gut Check... And Hey, I was a Real E-5 in The Air Farce.... a long long time ago... in a Galaxy Far Far Away... about 18,000 Klicks from here...

    Well Gentlemen,

Thank you for all of your input and supportive responses. I at least feel more secure in and if I should choose to roll back from 8 to 7... at least that procedure is far more well thought out than anything previous of similar import and timbre from my experience. Microsoft is actually thinking and reacting in a reasonable fashion. Who woulda thunk??!

In deference to the suggested alternative Browsers, well I've just Heard of Firefox, but not really much of why and how it would be a better alternative than IE. Once upon a time, long long ago in the beginning of my Net experience circa 1992 [does anyone remember the day of The Bulletin Boards??] I had started out with Netscape and continued on with it for as long as I was able. I had tried IE and I found Netscape a better concept and much more conducive to what a real life experience should be in regards to a browser.

As I said, I tried IE and found it to be basically MIA as to it's intuitive nature and the day to day operation... it sucked. With the advent I believe when I upgraded to either 98 or perhaps XP ~~ it's been so long ago... and I have trouble even finding my keys on a day to day basis so remembering the how and where... sigh... I was literally forced to accept IE ... which coincided with the then demise of Netscape... Both of which made me feel burdened and manipulated by decisive design.. and left with virtually no choice.. so alas I was led along with all the rest of the Lemmings... double sigh....

So now I have after years been forced to get used to what I am using now IE 8... I have not found the improvements between 7 and 8 to really be anything that has lit much of a fire under me... if anything I find it less attractive and just added confusion in taking the time to get used to the new look and operation. I don't much care for it... and being the little E-2 that I apparently am, I am not really able to elucidate in a manner I could effectively convey to all of you more adept NCO's and Officer's such that you would understand or I could validate from a Technical vantage point. Kinda like Art and the old chestnut "I may not know much about Art I just know what I like..." Well I can't effectively communicate my disdain for IE 8 but right from the Drop Down Address Bar it just isn't as pleasing or as comfortable as what I had gotten used to in V.7

OK so now that I have voiced my probably superfluous personal feelings... like who cares, right?? Besides me, that is... Well now I would like to request of you who feel it would be worth the time and effort to go into a little depth and offer a description of both feature function as well as the actual hands on implications of first installing as an add on any or all of what has been suggested ~~ I would invariably have to still maintain IE as an operative until such time as both familiarity, trust .. personal like of such as the New say, Firefox might present to me ~~ How would that impact me and my computer... on a day to day basis?

Please let me give you an asidem experience of which I am not certain is what I might experience in real time but I still find it germane to be something I would want most assuredly to avoid:

Anytime I have ever had to interface with Real Player {Boo! Sis!!!} or Quick Time even if just viewing a piece of media in their format I found it/they totally hijack my media files and turn every default back to their format for which I have to spend unwarranted time in Device Manager to return my media extensions back to the original designation. I absolutely resent that, and have done all in my power to excise any reference to either program.... more than willing to forego the viewing of anything that is in .ra or .qt format.

So am I going to go through similar forays where IE and/or Firefox Mozilla Whomever is going to be fighting for dominance and messing with all of my mime and add on recouterments?? The thought of that strikes shere terror in me spirit... and if I have to endure a daily struggle such as just described then my desire has... well let me put it in the vernacular where all of us 'He Men' {excuse me any Ladies so tuned in :wave } it will take all of the Wood out of... well I think you get the idea.

Should any feel that they would like to respond yet perhaps dubious of sharing such on MG Bandwidth {although I'm not certain as to why ~~ I just make the suggestion out of courtesy} perhaps resonding to my email addy would be more judicious: <snipped email addy>

Well thanks for listening and for any and all previous and future responses.

    As Always,

    Pvt Midrange

PS: Just out of wondering how or why... how do you get promoted to Corporal, say... more than likely out of my range if offering of Technical Advise is prerequisite ~~ I wouldn't dare offer such as is my knowledge base is, even though I have spent the past 22 years as a consummate Tweaker... A Layman I am, and not about to Peter Principle myself in the shadow of the Giants I see about me in my long lurking days herein... It has been over a year before I even felt confident enough to merely register and finally post a query... Get what I mean, JellyBean?? Opps!! Was I just too familiar?? :-D

I have no idea what you mean by "mime and add on recouterments" but I can say there are millions of happy Firefox users. Take a look at http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp; the Fx colum is Firefox and you can see that it has captured 47.7 of web browser usage as of May 2009.

Your concerns are overstated. Installing another browser won't change anything other than changing your default browser, IF you allow that during installation of the browser. But, the default browser can easily be changed later.

Thanks USAFVeteran... Your points read and well taken under advisement. So When were you in The AF?? ... Retired I would think by your handle... I was in '64-'68 and Disabled in '65 while In Country!! Still Proud As Heck to have given what I did!! Would do it all over again if given the chance. G~D Bless America... and ever Trooper who ever Served!! They didn't think much of us when we returned... Too Bad!! Our Blood is and was just as Red... too bad we had to Be so Blue about it... Sorry.. still a sore point.

    BTW, http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp; is a 404 connection FYI

And Please, point me to where I can get the latest version of Firefox for D/L.

    Thanks Again

No, I did not retire from military service. I was on active duty from 1969 to 1972. This included a tour in South Korea. I completely agree with you about the attitude generally conveyed by Americans towards veterans returning from Vietnam. Even though many people were opposed to the war, veterans were just doing their patriotic duty and should have received positive recognition for doing so.

This link should work: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp I inadvertently got a semi-colon tagged on to the end of it in my previous post; that's why it wouldn't work.

Firefox can be downloaded at http://majorgeeks.com/Mozilla_Firefox_3_d2248.html I see version 3.5 has just been released and I like what I read *here*. I'm using version 3.0.11, the most current version prior to the release of 3.5 but you might as well get 3.5, the newly released version.

If you go *here*, I suggest you scroll down the page and click the link for Take a Tour of Firefox 3.5; when that page opens, select Download video in MPEG-4 format if you want to save the video to your hard drive.

Thank You for that! There are many out there that realize we were/are every but as Patriotic and just did our duty as we were required and even volunteered to. It wasn't always that way... I remember being called a Baby Killer... That hurt and it still stings. Something I don't think I'll ever get over as long as I live. I know this is wrong but I fight feelings of resentment over the way the Troops who fight in The Middle East are all viewed as Heros.. Oh make no doubt about it, They ARE!! But the VA Hospitals are still filled with many of us so called Baby Killers who's contribution to The US of A was every bit as Honorable. Sorry Guys it's a soapbox point for me. I'll shut up now.

Thanks again to all who wish any Serviceman well. We just do our duty. Want to be a blessing?? Go visit a stranger in a Vet Hospital and make them not feel as alone as many of them do. Imagine what it would be alike to be all alone... and stuck there.

Hi MidRange, I do understand, really.. a LOT of my friends went thru the same thing as you, and I still remember them coming home, and what they had to go thru... Yeah, it is still quite fresh in my mind too.. A lot of guys I went to school with didn't come home alive, and those that did, came home minus a few parts. No, you weren't treated fairly, not by a long shot... I heard the same chants too... NOT ONE BIT FAIR....

But yet, see all the "Support our troops" signs.... That makes me wonder, "what about the "Vietnam Vets"? Nobody ever gave them a hand.... Buddy, my hat is off to you and all the Vietnam Vets always. YOU RULE!

I also have the same feelings.. Middle East, or Iraq or Afganistan.... They are doing the same thing you did, but they are heros..... Hmmmm. Something just doesn't sound right there, ya know? You are not alone! ;)

Thanks Tee Cee for your recognition. Whjat you say obviously comes from a place of sincerity... I have No Doubts as to where your heart is at and it IS edifying... and I don't know if I say I am grateful... well is that what I should be feeling or is the correct word to express whatever it is that I feel from your words... ya know what I mean?? It would feel icky that I should have to respond with feelings of Hat In Hand over what I believe is a Most Heartfelt response... And I do sincerely in return Thank You for the way you have ALWAYS felt. I think what sticks in my craw ~~ perhaps a heavy handed way of putting this... and I wish I were more prolific in choosing the exact or correct verbiage to express myself; but I trust you understand the difficulty I would have in talking about this topic and trying to be both diplomatic and yet true to my sense of self, Kapeesh?? Of course you do...

So the thing that bothers me is that I am as certain as can be that most if not all of everyone would agree with your pronounced sentiments... that is true... but still many others I feel have been "guilted" into taking a stance as yours... I believe you understand most assuredly what I am claiming without my needing to further elaborate... The Horse IS Dead... and that is a fact.

BUT... and this IS a Big But... If Anybody who reads this and can be truthful enough with themselves to recognize and admit that they were once one of the former who Judged Us and so unrighetously then there IS a way for them to put their "new found" compassion where their words are...

Like I alluded to in my previous ~~ There are a lot of Troopers stuck in VA Institutions who have NO family... No One to ease their Lonliness... and trust me, I Know ~~ Lonliness is Everything it's cracked up to be!! So If the sincerity of heart is there how about going over to a VA Hospital and inquire as to whom is it that is all alone... and then just don't pay a cursory visit, which would be 'Nice'... but give something a long the lines of what That Guy gave up and Adopt A Vet... make him part of Your Family!! Perhaps a visit just Once a Month... would that be too much to ask of YOU??! Look at what he had to give up indirectly protecting You & Yours and the rights you have to ignore all the Viet Nam Vets... to turn away because it is not convenient or do you have neither the Time nor Love for your fellow Creature or all the myriad of reasons YOU are free enough right now to Poo Poo what I am saying here and just blow off the concept...

Yep YOU are Free... to read this and go "Awww that's nice... he's got a point... Hey Marg will ya pass the remote... Wheel Of Fortune is on ya know..." and this will be the last you will ever allow yourself to Feel or more importantly DO!!

I Begins and Ends with YOU!! Yes YOU!! You are Free and Healthy and you can just shut your PC off anytime you want and just chalk me up to another Koo Koo Bird on some stupid soapbox... and "WTF is he to lay a guilt trip on me like that??!"

Well perhaps *I* am Your Conscience... I wasn't Born On The Fourth Of July but here it is this Saturday. And just what does it mean to YOU?!! Are you grateful for your life?? What about the poor soul who's got none. He lies there everyday... alone... and don't think he doesn't cry... He Men don't cry now do they... Trust Me, They DO!! And He is hurting... and He needs just what YOU can give.

So American's.... What'cha gonna do?? Call Ghostbusters?? Again it's up to YOU.

And remember just Who is Watching!! The Boss sees everything YOU do... He knows if you could have... if you would have... and then Exactly just what YOU *DID*.. Remember the little ditty about "... and did you find me in prison... or sick and infirm.... and as ye have done it unto The Least of These Ye have done it unto Me..."

Hey Major Geeks!! How about starting a movement where y'all become Major Hearts?? Hey but what do I know... I am just a lowely Private, right??!

    The End

Hello MidRange, take this subject to the lounge, and start a NEW thread there on this.... I think that would be quite appropriate, as we are getting way off the topic of IE8 here..

No, I am not brushing you off, really, this stuff belongs in the LOUNGE, and rightfully so... So, let's take it in there, before we both get booted by the Major himself!! ;)

In consideration of installing Firefox what do I do about importing all of my 'Favorites' from IE?

  17. Elder_Usr

During your installation of Firefox, it should ask you if you would like to import your favorites from IE. :) See, makes it simple.
