I feel like a lab rat

Hey Guys,

As most of you know I have had a rought couple of years health wise, especially april last year with kidney and liver failure as well as a heap of other complications I don't feel like going back into.

Anyway, I have found myself a new GP who is really good, but I am on a S8 medication called OxyContin 40mg twice daily but I have been assessed 2x already by the pain clinic who recommended that I stay on the oxycontin in the mean time, but in the long run, change over to methadone.

Now here is my problem, I associate methedone as a withdrawal medication for addicts to morphine & heroin. Is this true, and does methadone hole ANY pain relieving properties, as my pain from my bowel obstruction is real, and only affects me after I eat, and go to the toilet, the oxycontin is working for me at the moment, really good and stable, but it only has a few hours life span, and you can't up it above 2x day. so that it why they are looking at methadone.

Any help or tips would be appreciated, I am starting to feel like a gunea pig, with all these medications and change overs, trying this, trying that, also tried the Norspan 10mg patches without any success.

Again, any input would be greatly appreciated, also, I know I will suffer withdrawals from the oxycontin 40mg, but does the same go for methadone?

I'm not a medical professional by any means, and my main exposure to methadone has been due to its use as an anti-addictive medication for those abusing opiates.

However, I do know it is commonly prescribed as an analgesic also. It costs less then other pain-meds, which may account for it's common use I guess. As to it's effectiveness over other pain meds I cannot advise, though I am given to understand it's effects do last longer then some other medications.

I wish you good luck with your health issues. I am fortunate enough to be in fairly good health, but my wife has some severe health issues and is on many medications. Her sister is on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. So, I am no stranger to major health issues, so I can understand how diffucult it all can be.

I have been taking heavy pain meds for a number of years now and about 3 years ago they prescribed methadone for me as a pain relief but unfortunately it was not powerful enough so they put me back on the happy pills.

I hope you recover from your trauma and find some relief from your pain, I well understand what that is so my thoughts are with you.

Just agreeing with what's been said,I believe methadone is Latin for 'without pain' so that was its original purpose.

Its association with opiate withdrawal is one of the reasons it isn't prescribed more frequently as a pain reliever,its just got a bad rep.

 

Thanks for the advice guys, I see my Dr today, so I have a few query's, I am half n half on the matter, I just don't want to change over and find it doesn't help at all, and then I am stuck on that, as my doctor won't go backwards, so it is a little predicament.
