Just posting this to help you all avoid a mistake I made...
I got a new Nvidia GE Force FX 5500, apparently these are not compatable with the new DirectX 9.0 and up. This is the conclusion that I've come to after reading many many many posts of users with the same problem. The card will not play any games without crashes, many it will not play at all. Updating the bios, sound, etc etc doesn't help. Various versions of the drivers do not help. I can't find anywhere to download DX8.0 and all my games require 9+ anyhow! The card says fully DX9 compatable on the box. I paid enough money for this that I'm irratated enough to post this rant. The card will be going back tommorow for an ATI card. Hopefully the store will take it back as faulty merchandise. . .
Anyhow, Just thought I'd let people know. It doesn't look like i'm the only one with this same problem from the threads i've read on other sites. If you're considering a new vid card I'd go with anything but Nvidia or get the top of the line 6800, people say that one actually is working with DX9.

    Rant over-

    Blaine.

WTF, get your facts straight sir. I have various friends using various models of nvidia card from 5200 to 6800 gt with no problems. I myself have used a 5200, 5600, 5900 and 5950 xt with no direct x problems.

Is that using dx9.0c? Just curious because my error log is full of dx errors and the other forums i've looked around on there are a lot of people having the same problem. (just double checking before I go trade this one in and spend more for an ATI 9800 tomorow, didn't have time to get to the store today). Also can you please tell me what version of drivers you are using with the 5500 and dx9.0C... I've tried about 6 differant drivers, have had no luck getting it to run anything remotely graphic intensive, but will give it another try tonight if you can tell me 8 )

    Thanks,
    Blaine

d/l the driver cleaner from the section called driver utilities on the home page and use it. dont stack the drivers up. then go to www.nvidia.com and d/l the 66.93. then d/l coolbits to unlock extra things.

lmao shoot if you have the money trash can that card and buy the 9800

BFG, went out and exchanged the card for an ATI card... seems to be working fine with ATI, at least so far (about an hour).
