It does not recognize the external hard drive because you have to have the option in the bios to boot from USB, which alot of older computers do not!!

If you really want to get risky!!!! Some of those external drives are nothing but a internal drive within a case, and inside that case the drive is plugged into the adapter that turn into a USB adapter, which means...IF YOU WANT TO TAKE THE CAHNCE...you can try disassembling the external drive to try to prove my theory!! And if that is the case, then you can take out the drive and put it in the computer as an internal drive, and then your problem would be resolved!!

BUT KEEP IN MIND!!...I might not be 100% correct, so unless you are like me....somewhat handy with your hands and your brain, I wouldn't attempt it!! Lots of times when you disassemble something like that, you have to remove a sticker to get to the screws and on that sticker you will notice that it says "Removing sticker will void warranty"!! Or you also run the risk that if you are not good at disassembling and reassembling, then you might render yourself an unusable hard drive!!

So please take into consideration EVERYTHING I said before you start ANYTHING!!! I don't want to be the one responsible for you ruining your hardware!!

Let me know if you need anymore help!!

And anymore details you can provide about the computer can better help us resolve your issue with another possible scenario!!

if you have a computer with a cd-rom drive you can remove it from yours and put it in his long enough to install the OS. Or put his hard drive in your computer, and format the drive and copy over the install files (if you're using a 9x Operating system.) Other than that and what has already been suggested, I'm not sure what other advice I can give.
