Re: Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your so

I'd love to help but what is your problem exactly?
If your problem is similar to the above, let me know what is going on in your Device Manager.
Check: Device Manager for bad drivers.
For XP: Go to Start>Control Panel> System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then click the plus sign in front of Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
For Vista: Go to Start>Control Panel>Device Manager
In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of your audio device, that means no audio driver is installed.
A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems

I asked for your post to be moved to a thread of it's own.

    NuhC - welcome to Majorgeeks.com :)

It's better to start your own thread with your problem than hijack another member's thread, otherwise it becomes impossible to follow advice.

Help an old man out here, would ya?
I took a quick look down through the Driver section and I don't see ninjagirl nor do I remember which thread your post was in. (I look through a lot of them in a day)
So to speed things up you can do these things.

    1) Tell us what your problem is or link us back to ninjagirl's post or wait until someone decides to search out her post

    2) Check: Device Manager for bad drivers.
Tell us what devices have bad drivers, if any.

    3) Post a make and model # if your PC is manufactured (Dell, Gateway, HP, etc.) or your motherboard ID, if it is a build.
Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers. Upload the report as an attachment
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.

If we have no info, we can't help.

That's because there is no ninjagirl listed as member here. At least I didn't find her in the members list.

The Everest report is basically useless, without some background info.
Is there some reason you can't answer my questions and provide some info?
All I can do without info is suggest drivers for your Chipset and Audio.
AND I"M NOT EVEN SURE THAT YOU HAVE AN AUDIO PROBLEM.

    Go here:
    http://support.asus.com/download/download_item.aspx?product=1&model=K8V-MX&SLanguage=en-us#
    Install your Chipset driver:
    VIA 4-in-1 Driver V1.00 for Windows 98SE/Me/2000/NT/XP/2003

    Then your audio driver:
SoundMax Audio Driver V5.12.01.5150 for Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP/2003

    OK, thanks for the info.
Check that Windows Audio Service is started.
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

I have a hard time with getting ASUS links to work, try this again:
    http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
    (It worked for me.)
Now choose this info in the General Download section lists in mid screen:
    Product: Motherboard
    Series: Socket 754
    Model: K8V-MX
    Click Search.

That should get you to the download page.
Now install these two drivers in this order:
    Chipset driver:
    VIA 4-in-1 Driver V1.00 for Windows 98SE/Me/2000/NT/XP/2003

    Audio driver:

SoundMax Audio Driver V5.12.01.5150 for Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP/2003

Check: BIOS to insure on-board sound is enabled.
As the PC starts, press one of these keys,
(here is a list by manufacturer)http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm
Or the right key will be posted on the very first screen. (Try Del / Delete)
Tap it until you enter set-up, then look for your audio (it should be in Advanced or in Integrated Peripherals)
Make sure sound is set correctly, when finished. For Onboard Sound (Enabled) For an add-on Sound Card (Disabled)
