I have to be quick as my laptop will crash at any moment.

I would assume I am infected but it is odd. Sometimes my Toshiba will turn off when I am minding my own buisness just like this. I restored the system. And was finially able to actually log into windows.

Than tried to run Registry Scan....Yeah, it found over 200 Custom Control Errors, but my PC crashes before the end.

I have been reading some articles here, but err, yeah, like I said my PC crashes at any given moment. YES EVEN IN SAFE MODE running the registry.

SO I guess my question is, WHY? and what can I do? I had some message at first about "cocreate instance my yahoo DDL failed" or something similar...

Please someone help, I just got this PC and am not all that computer literate. I mean I cant even run the registry without crashing. GRRRRRRR....

    What is a DDL error?

    It actually powers off?

    Sure the battery isn't bad?

Even if you ahve the AC cord plugged in, the battery must still be able to hold a charge and work properly.

Yes it shuts off by itself. There is a battery and the charge is good plus is is connected securely.

I think there is something I downloaded perhaps. SO I did a system restore. I hope this helps.

But it is odd that it would do this in safe mode as well.

This is not a power supply problem.

Does anyone know what else it may be or how I can successfully run Registry Mechanic to fix the 200 custom controls before my PC shuts down?

Registry Cleaners, I dont really trust them that much, If I do remove things with them I confirm each entry before removing it.

If any I would suggest running RegSupreme Pro 1.0.

Just for clarification..is it actually crashing or just shutting off randomly? Have you checked the event viewer to see if there are any specific errors logged?

The reason I ask is I have a similar issue with my laptop...I don't have any errors...it just shuts off whenever it wants too...my issue I know is hardware reltated...something is shorting out...OS shuts down, screen goes blank but the fans are still running....is this at all similar to what yours is doing?

For the power to cut straight off...maybe I am a newb, but what exactly can do that besides hardware problems?

If a critical service crashes--you get ~30-60 seconds warning.

If shutdown.exe is called by anything (usually by user or virus), you get a typical windows is shutting down screen.

I know you are quick to discount my suspsicion about the battery, and even the power supply, but let me ask you this--how do you know for sure?

I don't see that this is a software issue at all, even if its not the battery and.or PSU.

I agree, random instant shut downs are nearly always hardware related. Troubleshooting a laptop can be tough, since it's not always easy to swap things such as RAM, Mobo, PSU, processor, etc, etc. It could be as simple as the heatsink not sitting properly & causing the processor to overheat.

or the worst (happens to me once every couple weeks): a thermal sensor tripping somewhere on the motherboard even though the temperature is well w/in range. this will cause an instant shutoff to prevent heat damage.

I removed the battery and just went with the ac adapter. And still it is happening...

No warning is given, just BAM shut down, automatically shuts itself down...

I did two system restores thinking maybe that would help. NO.

It shuts down at random times so I can not pinpoint anything exactly. For instance at start up, trying to install a program, or after a few hours of being stable it will just shut down as well.

    I did the AVG.

IT doesnt crash I guess, it just shuts itself off. I am not sure if the fans still are running when it happens, I dont think so because it becomes quiet.

I know it is VERY annoying and I would like to do something about it.....GRRRR...

    ...
Sasser doesn't shut off the computer.

  14. Thing is, Sasser makes windows give you an error telling you it will re-boot you system insomething like 55 sec.

    Try to reformat it...

Attempting something this drastic at this point could be disasterous...what if the computer repeatedly shuts down during the reformat? What about attempting to back up data/files that the user may want to try to save? Formatting is a last resort...please, lets see if we can figure out the actual issue first.:)

    @ vulgerlove
What operating system are you using? Do you have all of your critical windows updates and what scans have you run to eliminate the possibility of a virus?

If using XP/2000 try running this tool to see if you have blaster, sasser or my doom.

Also, if using XP please check the event viewer log for any errors as mentioned in my previous post...many times the information in these logs can help narrow down the problem. Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer (specifically Application & System)

How hot is it getting. Is any part of the case over hot? are you sure fan is working? Does fan turn on/turn off intermittently, or does the fan run all the time? Bazza
