I have a birthday coming up, and am trying to find out what i want. Here is what is going through my mind.

I can get a Anthlon 64 2800+ from NewEgg for $145, and an Asus Motherboard for $75.

Right now my motherboard can handle up to a XP3200. I have read that with these new value chips coming out, the XP chips prices are not going to get any cheeper.

So i am faced with a decision. Do I?

    1. Buy a New motherboard and Anthlon 64 2800+?

    2. Just buy a XP3200 +?

    3. Just keep what i have, for a couple of years, and the prices will be lower for the 64 bit chips, plus i will be able to get one that supports Dual Channel Ram in the future.

Right now what i have is great. I have no problems running anything, and shouldnt for a while. Its just that i cant seem to find anything i would want for my birthday????!!!! I am just getting furustrated.

So please voice your opinions for me. I will accept any wacks on the head as well. :D

Personally I'd upgrade to a higher Athlon XP. Yes, the Athlon64's are amazing processors, but no doubt they will get more affordable and even better performing as the technology matures.

Thought a bout a new graphics card?

the athlon will be re-released as the "sempron" with only 256k of cache, just so you know. We got in some Sempron 2600's the other day, it's just an atlon with half the cache disabled. I don't know how high AMD is going to take the sempron line. I feel that it's a stop gap measure until the current athlon 64's are the bargain chips. The athlon xp was pretty much maxed out at the current core speeds.

    Thanks FW.

Yeah those sempron chips are really going to suck. Thats what i ment about the value chips.

I dont think that i will purchase any of them. Maybe i should just go with a 3200+?

I dont know...i will wait for some more opinions, and sleep on it...i have a little while too :)

I would go for the 3200+ & maybe a second drive in a RAID if your board supports it. That would get you decent speed increase for your money.

    Thanks Suesman.

It seems that i am more and more leaning towards a 3200.

The raid is a good idea. I wonder if my board supports it?

Wait isnt that only for Sata drives or am i wrong?
