CPU hit mark of 3 GHz in 2003 with out it over heating :cryThe solution many cores to make it faster !!!

Now I hear from people starting from i7 intel is switching to hyperthreading. The i7 is physically 4 cores but with hyperthreading it is like 8 cores.

The i3 is a dual core, i5 is a mainstream quad and an i7 is a higher end quad with hyper-threading .

People say that intel is hitting the mark soon with many cores and hyper-threading.

What does this mean for morse law or what ever it called that CPU go up 2 facter every 18 months .

Is silicon coming to the end? Are they going to have to go to optical computing.

Moore's Law (named after one of the founders of Intel) basically states the maximum amount of processing power that can be fit on a single CPU doubles every 18-24 months.

There are conflicting schools of thought on if this will continue. The density of standard CPUs (the ones in our current computers) has become so tightly packed there may not be much more room to grow. On the other hand, as you stated, newer technology may come along.

Here are two recent articles offering both sides of the issue:
