look at what they e-mailed me!

We would like to advise you that there has been excessive usage on your Rogers Hi-Speed Internet account which is in violation of our end user agreement with you and in particular, your agreement not to use the service in a way that creates an unusually large burden on our network.

Rogers has a responsibility to ensure that all of its customers experience a high quality of service and performance when using Rogers Hi-Speed Internet. Your usage consumes a disproportionate share of our network's resources which has a negative impact on network performance. In fact, you fall within the category of less than 1% of our residential customers whose usage exceeds that of the average customer by well over 2000%.

Please be advised that it is important that your account's usage returns to reasonable levels. Unfortunately, unless your usage pattern significantly changes starting in the next two days, we will have no choice but to suspend your Internet account for a period of seven days.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then they call me, it wasn't even a person, some automated message with some guy saying i'm abusing them, and they sent me that email too...
WTF!!! why am I paying for this if I cant use it however I want? They said if I dont tone down my bandwidth consumption, and continue to put a strain on their network they'll cancel me! Normally I wouldn't care, but the only other major ISP is sloooooooooooooooooooooow!

Running an FTP server or website on it? None of my business, but just curious.

Sorry to hear it man. While your looking at your TOS, read the part where they cap you during peak hours.

Waste of a network if you ask me.

If you haven't yet, go here and make sure you don't have any good alternatives... xttp://www.dslreports.com/town

Sadly alot of ISPs are going down this route where as your sound like it doesnt have a monthly cap it does in the agreement have a clause that nearly all ISPs have!

if as mentioned above you are running either an FTP or website off your PC you may need to look at either limiting the uptime or in the case of a website... a hosting package.

if its downloads you are doing then just give a few days a week or a week a month break from heavy downloading.

thats pretty dumb of rogers, so are you running a server or anything like that off your comp?

    Some ISP's block certain ports
    80 is one of them.

I called COX to ask them why and this is the reply

To prevent you from running a server.

they also limit the bandwidth on uploads.

    From their website

Protecting our upstream bandwidth - Upstream bandwidth to a cable plant is limited. If customers overuse their upstream bandwidth by running high-traffic servers or becoming infected with a worm or virus, it can degrade the service of other customers on that node.

Your ISP should have certain ports blocked as well.

Your computer might be a zombie you might want to check into that.
A zombie is a computer that has been taken over by somebody else and is running that computer without the user knowing about it. Usually to relay email or illegal activities. Someone might be using your computer as a server.

It happened to our computer at work. till we found the bug

Here is the list of ports blocked by certain ISP's and the reasons

Notice how they do not block port 8080????

Why is it that ISP's studiously avoid actual numbers? What exactly is "reasonable", and why don't they post that prominently?

For grins I went looking for it at Rogers' site, eventually figured out it was in "Rogers High Speed Internet Documents", and both the EULA and Acceptable Use Policy links are dead.

Long Live DSL. Bell South never gripes.

Are you running a good firewall that blocks and monitors both incoming and outgoing traffic? With cable, if you're not, you seriously should be.

What exactly are you intentionally uploading? Including any file-sharing apps that allow others access to your system?

    I use ZoneAlarm..

I just got a new 120 gig hard drive so I have been downloading all day and night. 20 gigs a day.

I see you have zone alarm installed on your system so the zombie theory is out.

but if you are interested in knowing more about it then

The firewall should detect outgoing connections.

errr... sounds like a virus or someone has nicked your username password and shared it around their friends for sum free surfin. That is a hell of a lot of transfer.....

Either that or the ISP is having a bad day :p

just worked it out its about 0.2MB a minute(/slaps second.. silly fishy.. ahh, maths never was my strong point) .. not that much but you cant be doing that ALL day surley?

    Thats ~14.1 mb a minute.

    ~.25mb a second

I can see why Rogers got upset, yes:D

Its possible, if you have a steady 3+ mbit connection, maybe a little more, and get a steady connection throughout the day.

    Its unlikely, but possible.

i think you should phone them ask and ask them how the hell they came to the conclusion you were using that much bandwidth. unless you are downloading stuff 27/7 and i doubt you would be get that much with a bog standard connection

I dunno Goldfish, it sounds like to me in the above statement that he is stating he downloads that much, not that he was accused of downloading that much.

    27/7 Goldfish?

What is so special about the UK that they get 3 more hours in a day?

    I feel so cheated :(

got the same letter and phone call from cox......four warnings so far....and all I do is game?

They even sent me a bill with over usage charge!!!
    isn't $49.00 & two more ip's at $6.95 monthly enough?
have two routers but trying be fair ordered the other two ip's......even after they told me "your using a router why are you ordering more ip's?" I told them so you don't go belly up like @home did.
