I know it's hardware but...

I wanted to check out the OS side before I threw my printer away. It just stopped working. Everything works as normal, except it doesn't print, and after a while the message that the document failed to print shows up, but there are no other symptoms. I am running XP home, and the printer is a Roland PR1012 dot matrix, which is using the driver for a "Epson 9 pin"

Where can I go in the OS to troubleshoot it?

    Thanks.

PS it's connected and plugged in and switched on :)

Hey Mr.P, start>control panel>printers and other hardware>printers and faxes>left hand pane, second box "troubleshooting printing" should do it :)

Thanks for answering billH, but I don't see that stuff. Are you sure it's available in XP home?

I go Start/settings/printers and faxes, or Start/Settings/Control Panel/Printers and faxes, and get to the same place, but I see no troubleshooting options in the left pane.

If you notice, second box down is the troubleshoot printers heading. Maybe the whole left pane is collapsed. Look for the chevron marks and see if the panel opens up
edit: MrP I thinki you're stopping one step short. start>control panel>printers and other hardware>printers and faxes (notice the header on my insert?)

    Thanks for the answers guys.

billH, the problem I had with not seeing what you saw was remedied by resetting my OS to original settings, instead of Classic. I don't know why that made a difference, but it did. I can see the troubleshooting option now. I'll be attacking it later though, as I have things to do today. I'll be back in this thread later if I can't solve the problem.

Unnamed422, my printer is so old I have to fight off archaeologists from the local college in order to keep it. If it dies, it dies.

    Thanks again guys.

When I see unnamed's post above, in EITHER Firefox or Netscape or IE, I see a lot of tags for setting the display font as Comic Sans MS and ending the setting (/font) in square brackets. Presumably that's not what unnamed intended us to see. Does anybody else using another browser actually see his font-choice displayed?

If not, maybe this is unnamed's chance to fiddle with that sig.

Nope Wiz, in IE/SlimBrowser I'm registering the same thing as you are.

Well, maybe it's not clear enough that that's the case, when new members go to set up their sigs. Anyhoo, I trust Unnamed and others won't take offense if we let 'em know that they're trying to use things in their sigs that are not permitted/supported here.

    OK, Unnamed?

WHY blame Microsoft for peripheral manufacturers lazyness to update old device drivers so they work with newer OS's?

plus why dredge up an old thread, when Mr P most likely in the last 6+ months has bought a new printer.
