    Hello,

    First time here.

I run windows XP with 512 DDR ram. (256 each slot...have 2 empty)

I want to upgrade to 1024.

How do I go about finding the exact type of ram I have without taking it out of the case?

In other words, where on my computer can I get exact specs of my ram? I have looked around and I see where there are different types of DDR ram for sale and I want to make sure I get the same I have.

Please give me step by step instructions.

To anyone who replies tyvm in advance :)

    Try ASTRA 32

Have a look around there and see if you can find some info. You'll need to find a number like PC2700, and probably a CL number too (usually between 1 and 3). That should give you enough to search with.

The easiest thing would be to install some software that will tell you what kind of motherboard you have. SisofSandra, AIADA32, etc. Will do this. If you know what type of MOBO you have go to thier website and it will tell you what RAM is supported. Do a goolge search to download the above mentioned programs. What type of PC is it? Did you build it?

Ty for replying to me :)

This is my motherboard I assume.

    I have a Pentium 4 1.7 gig

So do I go to Intel to check? I was hoping that somewhere on my PC it would tell me exactly what RAM I had.

Alright i did some checking, but couldnt find anything via search. I would suggest you contact intel to find out what type of memory is supported. Maybe someone else will find the specs.

SiSoft Sandra under Mainboard Information then Memory Module(s) should tell us the RAM type and manufacturer. Have you given that a try yet. It almost sounds like
that your mobo doesn't support DDR RAM but I could be wrong.

Well....I'm really a novice and trying to learn things every day and there is so much I don't know it's overwhelming /sigh.

Apparently I do not have DDR ram but have this instead which I now remember was told it was better RAM when I purchased my computer two years ago.

    RIMM RAMBUSS 256/16 @ 400mt/s

I have two sticks of this.

    Is this good ram?

When I ran the Sandra download (thank you for the tip) a couple of things....well actually there were many many things.....didn't make sense.

I wanted to copy the results so I could post here. The only thing I saw was 'copy to clipboard' and 'save benchmark results'. I clicked on them both and that is as far as I got. I have no idea where this was saved or if it even was. Any advice of how to get this onto notepad to make a .txt file would be much appreciated.

I looked around in Sandra and noticed 'tips' but every time I clicked on them I got an error message that sandra.hlp file was missing. I did a search and it's not on my computer.
Said I should d/load again or something of that nature.

Any assistance is much appreciated. I know I'm asking a lot of questions.

Copy to clipboard will save theh data to "memory" so you can open up a post and then paste (right click paste) into the text box.

I feel like such a pest.

I actually figured out how to run the install wizard to do a report. Yay me.

With regards to the 'help' files it said I had to reinstall them NOT d/load again. I will try to figure out where the 'hlp' files are.

    Is this RAM any good?

Should I be looking at a new motherboard?

    Thank you again.

    This may help

you decide on what type of memory you need. http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=799&page=3 This is a article on your board and the type of memory it uses.
Your board should accept both PC600 and PC800 RDRAM. The article also states that RIMM modules must be used in identical pairs.

Your best bet is to probably get yourself two more sticks of the 256 RDRAM memory to add to the remaining two slots to boost your total to 512.

Best of Luck to you! :)

She already has 512 another 512 would give her 1024 or a Gig for short. The one thing I do not see is the Brand name of the RAM and you probably want to match it. Look where I told you before and see if you can find a brand name (ie. Samsung, Corsair, Intel or other).

Something else to consider is Intel stopped making the RIMM RAMBUS boards it was later viewed as kind of a faliure. The RAMBUS memory is going to be pricey.

Sorry that link doesn't work. Go to NewEgg.com and enter RAMBUS memory in the search and click Go.
