I bought a pawnshop computer for a neighbor who wanted to learn internet and computers. It passed all the diagnostics with flying colors and since she is cute and friendly, I wanted to teach her. It's and Intel celeron 133 with a 6g HD, Windows 2000 and me.

I was trying to set it up with a few tools, etc. and Antivir would not let me setup 'cause I didn't have administrator priviliges. I enable "administrator" with a password thru control panel. When I rebooted, the system logon demanded a password for "John Doe" user. Now I can't get past that.

All I want to do is to set this up for her with what she needs to dial up ANY
user-friendly connection and play with it.

    HELP!!

did you get any of the install cds with it? there are ways in, but when limited to legality and me not being sure the exact letter of the law, the safest suggestion is to just reinstall. If not we can try to figure out something from there.

    Kyme17, MellowMan & Tux2460:
Thanks for the responses. I didn't get anything but the box for $20 and don't have the Windows 2000 discs to reinstall. If there is no fix, I suppose I can junk the whole thing and start over again but I hate to be defeated by my own stupidity. Does anyone have any other ideas or sources for info.

If I can find some installation discs, is installation transparent; will I loose files
and programs I installed before I shot myself in the foot????

Maybe I'll change my screen name to "Deaf and Dumb Smith"

you can try removing the cmos batery with the unit unplugged
also may be a jumper to clear the cmos settings

Just to make sure of something...

I'm assuming you have typed administrator in the user name field, and your password in the password field and in the log in field you selected the option that has "(this computer)" on it. Like I said,... I'm assuming you did this, correct?

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I finally solved that problem with a $2.99 (+ shipping) disk I found on eBay that let me remove the passwords in DOS. There were lots of resourses out there and in my quest for the grail, I found sites that guaranteed a solution at prices ranging from $2.99 to $1900.00.

See my posting and help me with yet another dilemma.
