Well, of late, I have found myself wihtout a vehicle and have had to rely on public trans to get places. I came up with this great idea this weekend, what if I could put all the schedules I need on my Palm pilot?!?!?!?

After some reasearch and re-installing my Palm software on the PC (Somehow I messed it up the first time *shrug*) and then hitting the bus site (www.centro.org for you central new yorkers who may need it) and downloading all the schedules in PDF format, then going to adobe's site to get the Reader for palm, then after getting it all set up...... I HAVE MY SCHEDULES ON MY PALM PILOT!!!!

I love technology when it works :)

Technology when it works is NEAT :)

I'm just trying to get a GPS app working on my phone at present, when it works it should be nifty as at least I will have conformation I'm lost ;)

The only downside is that you have to take public transportation.:p ;) :D

True, but being the type of person that I am, i don't let it get me down. I have realized that if I continue to use the bus when the car is back onthe road (during the week for work) and just use the car on the weekends, I can make a tank of gas stretch from 1 a week to one every 5-6 weeks. That cuts my gas cost down to about 20% of previous. Even with the $30 a week we spend onthe bus (work and misc trips) it still brings my transportation costs for the 2 of us down to about half what they were... kinda scary huh?

You know i am so tired of hiring the "oh you don't have a vehicle , how do you do anything" everyone seems to think they need to drive every little place. You know how much better earth would be if even for one day no one drove anywhere. I am 21 and have never driven a day in my life. Very commonly people are like omg, and don't believe that. I ride my bike every, and that works very well. You people and your gotta drive everywhere attitude, thats part of the reason most of america has become so fat and lazy. Sorry if this seems like a rant but I know you guys & gals are reasonible unlike people i normaly talk with about this subject. Not a dang thing wrong with public transportation. Not to mention all the money i save not paying for gas to fill an suv to drive 5 blocks to get groceries. Sorry just had to vent about that attitude of "must have a vehicle" any how piece out.

Coleman, you do have a point... to a point. I agree that we do take our driving privilidges a little far sometimes, and I have realized that during thsi carless stint. I used to drive 3 blocks to run to the local corner store, now we just walk. I have lost about 15 pounds since this all started, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, there are times when it is much more convenient to drive, groceries being one of them. We were used to going to a particular store to shop, usually on the weekend, but can't because the bus service is not convenient to it now, which does cost a little more to shop locally, and it is harder to bering home a week's worth of groceries when you are carrying. (I need to get a grocery getter cart for that one of these days). I also don't get to go to my parents house now as there are no busses where they live. On top of that, I have a harder time getting my son onthe weekends, for the same reason. I will concede that perhaps we drive when we don't need to, but there are times when a vehicle is needed.

Speaking of city navigation and technology - I'm trying to make a model of the London Transport system using Ruby. I want to implement various protocols to work out the state of the network at any point and the response time and routing between nodes on the network. I'm sure I've spoken about this before but it's been a bit of a thread killer - lol.

My bro's bought a Tomtom dashboard GPS,it blew me away how accurate the thing was,it refreshed our position every couple of feet, the route planner is really cool shows you the shortest route and if you divert instantly plans you the next quickest route, the display is awesomely clear and the graphics quite amazing

The difference between the TomTom and the previous generation of sat nav is a country mile, these actually work and are also totally portable "no need to tear your car apart installing it" half the size of a Playstation portable and long battery life :)

I don't drive... ever. I always take the bus to work or wherever I'm going. I'm just saying that the downside is that Calltaker now has to take public transportation because it's more inconvenient and certain other people make the ride an unplasant one. It doesn't happend all the time but some people are just... ... ... I can't think of a nice word.:D

lol.... i know what you mean CA... there's always got to be that one or two peoplle who want to start stuff... but i take a book nad read the whole waya nd ignore what goes on.

My only real complaint is that it messes with my schedule a lot... get to work an hour early, leave a half hour late... things like that.
