Is there a way you can delete your operating system??

My pc froze so i restarted it the manual way and when it loaded all it said was "No operating system dectected". This happened twice and it took me atleast 4 hours each time to get it back, then it acted as if nothing ever happened. I still had all my files, programs, pictures, etc...

So, how in the heck do you delete an operating system?confused

    Dyamond,
I had this same problem myself once, and it turned out to be something simple. I think a cable was not quite plugged in. I undid all my cables, including disconnecting my hard drive, dusted everything, plugged it all back in and it worked. It happened a second time and I did the same thing, checked that all the plugs were in properly and it worked again. Since then I've never had the problem again. Try this first.

Your hard drive may be going south. Make sure to save everything before anything further happens. Try running Windows disk checking utility.
    Right click on MyComputer
Right click on C: drive This should be your main drive letter.
If not choose the drive that is appropriate.
    Choose Properties
    Click the "Tools" tab
Click the button "Check Now..." under "Error-checking"
Put tick marks in the two checkboxes and click "Start"
This will ask you if you want to perform the check on the next start up. Choose "Yes"
    Reboot the system
This will take a while so be patient.
When it is complete, defrag the hard drive. To do this follow the same above procedures but choose "Defragment Now" instead of "Check Now".

Peter Parker is on it. For our older laptops at work the "No operating system dectected" is a weekly occurance.

    N84Christ,
Does your system detect an operating system if you put the recovery cd in? Peterparker may be right in that it could be a hardware rather than a software problem. It would be a good idea if you could ask to have this whole thread moved to the hardware section. Also, why did it let you back in after 4 hours? Did you keep trying throughout the 4 hours? Or did you let it sit and do nothing all that time?

Also N84Christ, please don't tag your problems on others posts.

Could also be a bad connection between motherboard and HD. This sometimes happens due to a computer being moved or knocked, or it could just be a bad cable. It happened to a computer of mine once, and I had begun to wonder if it was time to get rid of it. Turned out to be a faulty IDE cable. When replaced, the problem stopped.

I don't have this problem anymore and the only reason I gave N84Christ the link to this thread is so he might benefit from the answers I was given not to open this up again.

But to answer your question - I fiddled around with the system recovery disks for about four hours.. trying this and trying that and on my last try (with Windows 98 disks as a last shot resource b/c the system disks for ME werent working) and it on my last reboot - poof it came back good as new(when i say it came back it did just that.. no recovery, it just started up as if nothing had happened).
