I am going to finally get away from the dreaded "dial-up" connection, I'm going to ADSL with Verizon, I am going to need a NIC and after spending quite abit of time at Tiger Direct and New Egg, I'm confused, my computer is a few years old and the PCI slots support 2.1 - the OS is Win. 98SE, I found cards ranging from $10.00 to $100.00, all I need is a card to connect the cable from the tower to the modem - I've looked at Mach Speed, Belkin, D-link and Net Gear to name a few - can you guys give me an idea of what will best suit my needs and not break the bank  Thanks for any and all help !!!!!!

I've always had good luck with the Net Gear NIC's and that is what I'm using now. I've found them to be inexpensive and reliable, and this was the NIC that my cable company was going to install, but I already had it. Price should be between $10 and $20.:)

Good move to get away from dialup.
Any nic will work. I prefer Linksys, but you will get multiple suggestions. I don't spend more than 10-15 bucks. The last one cost 5.99 They all work. You will get a disk with the nic card so you can install the driver.

Agree... cheap is low risk for an ethernet NIC. Just make sure there is a W98 driver for it. White box stuff (china) is fine, as well as the brands mentioned already.
