I need a Vietnamese character set which will run with WordPad

I am trying to create a .srt captions file for a friend who is Vietnamese. There is a wonderful online translation website HERE which works perfectly. The movie I am trying to translate is "Shooter".

I went to http://www.addic7ed.com/ and searched for the subs for "Shooter" and then downloaded the English .srt file. This I was then able to open with WordPad with no problem.

I then translated the text of the English .srt file to Vietnamese; and then I cut and pasted that translation into the .srt file in place of the English text. It all looked good until I saved the file and reopened it.

What started out looking like this:

    ended up looking like this:

Every character that was not recognized by WordPad became a ?.

I tried Word to no avail. I then tried Open Office Writer; and it does not produce a .txt file that is of any use.

I went to Control Panel>Regional and Language Options>Advanced and there is a checked listing that reads "1258 (ANSI/OEM - Viet Nam)" but the listing is grayed out. Most of the other languages are in black even if they are unchecked.

Is there any way that I can get what appears to be a character set which already exists on my computer to work or, in the absence of that, access a character set which will work with WordPad so I can complete this task?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You need the font for it to work I believe, try this:

    http://www.vps.org/article.php3?id_article=122

    I downloaded

    VPS Can Tho
VPS Can Tho Hoa (installed this in file)

    VSP Truong Sa Light
VSP Truong Sa Light Hoa (installed this in file)

Now works for me in Word Pad, Chuyển động.

I scanned both files and safe, but as always please scan your files prior to installation. If you run into another character not working, look for it in other available fonts. If you need help installing the font, let us know your OS.

    Good Luck

I tried saving the file in Unicode and that seemed to work but the DVD player (Divx compatible) would not recognize it. The subtitles do work on my computer, however.

It was strange that one of the fonts is Vung Tau because the person that I am trying to do this for is from Vung Tau, VN which is a bit north of what used to be known as Saigon.

Thanks for the help. I will try these and see what happens. Do I install them in the same directory as WordPad or do they go in the system fonts directory?

I am using XP Home HP OEM install.

    Thanks,

    J

I downloaded the files and they were clean. I then extracted them to C:\Windows\Fonts and also to C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories where WordPad is located.

This did not work as desired. The fonts are still not recognized by WordPad unless they are saved in Unicode format which the DVD player does not recognize.

I guess I need to go out on the 'net and see if I can find out what the tricks and nuances of .srt file creation are.

    Thanks,

    J

If it is any help, I found a site which has subtitles in Vietnamese in various forms and none of them are recognized by the DVD player. They run just fine on my commputer.

I believe the problem lies in the DVD player and, if so, there is no cure.

    Thanks for the help.

    Install in the Fonts Dir.

Control Panel > Fonts > File > Add New (then add the unzipped Fonts you downloaded)

*You should not extract to your OS file, extract to another folder like "downloads" and then add the extracted files.

Once the fonts are installed they're available to WordPad and other programs. Try undoing what you did and install via control panel to register them and see if that helps (maybe plopping them in OS doesn't register them, not sure never tried that). But I would still undo just to keep your system clean.

After reading up a little on .srt files it may still not convert right but worth a shot. Found same info to re recognized files, players, conversions and does not look good.
