Hi BigBlue... can you give us a little more information, like when you say data do you mean all data other than Windows, and how much and what operating system you have, basically the more information given the easier it is to help you..

When you open up your PC, do you have access to a spare hard drive power plug/socket, and access to a second place on the hard drive ribbon from the motherboard to your existing hard drive. If so, turn off and disconnect all power cords. Then hook up your new hard drive and lay it on top of your case. Make sure that new drive is well insulated from contact with the case. Put a book, or something, between the new drive and the PC case. When all is connected, plug in power cords and switch on. PC should recognise new drive as well as old drive if all is OK. Then it is only a matter of using a copy program.

If you don't have a spare power socket and/or a spare place on your hard drive ribbon cable, these can be bought cheap from any PC store.

Let us know how you go. Make sure your BIOS will accept the size of your new hard drive.

System specs and OS would be helpful.. Bazza

The system is a Gateway G6-366C Celeron PC... Running win 98SE... Basically I was going to just add the second hard drive on as a secondary but the way the pc is set up I don't have room inside the case... So I decided just to use the new one... I bought a western digital 80Gig HD... I have it partitioned and formatted... And the software SAYS it's copied everything... To make it a "bootable drive".... However when I try unplugging the original HD... (switching the jumper and plugging the new drive in)... It won't boot up... So I'm kinda lost as to what I need to do... If more info is needed please let me know! And thanks for any help you can give!

I'll let smarter MG 'ers than I suggest suitsble software but maybe investigate Norton's GHOST.

Type in backup in MG search box.

You will be inundated with stuff.

Try link below. It is free. I use it regularly but have never done a full restore. Make sure evrything possible is shut down before running to increase the chance of a fully successful operation. Bazza
