I Need Help installing my iomega zip 100 drive

I'm working with a newly acquired Dimension 4600 Series with WindowsXP. I have a lot of zip disks left over from my previous computer which used Windows98. Granted it's as old as Methusula but I want to install my Iomega Zip100 Parrallel-Port drive and extract the files from my disks. I went to Iomega'a website and downloaded the software for WindowsXP. My problem is in installing the blasted drive. It seems there's a cable which runs from the Zip100 to the printer. Well, the Dell All-In-One printer I have does not configure properly for such installation. What do I do?
Presently, I have it installed without that printer cable connection and all I have is both green and amber lights on but it's sleeping. Further, I can't locate the drive when I click on "My Computer". Help!

 

I had used Zip-100 parallel port drive with Windows 98, and had some printer problems too. It worked best when only the driver was installed (no additional utilities). The driver I used was ioware9xdrv.exe.
Zip drive must be connected directly to parallel port (don't use a switch box). Then connect printer cable to printer connector on Zip drive!
For the printer to work properly you may have to turn off bi-directional communications (MyComputer>Printers>Properties>Details>Spool settings).

Additional tips:
- verify that no other device is using IRQ7 (at the same time)
- check in DeviceManager for conflicts: IRQ, DMA, I/O,...
