You most likely have a hardware error...

Start by checking your cables, power supply, USB, connections and such stuff. Perhaps you should ask to have the thread moved to the hardware forum here on MajorGeeks. The mods can do that...

    HI

No signal on the monitor is generally linked to your graphic card, so steps I would do are to disconnect the monitor cable from the card, then remove the graphic card and then reseat it back into the motherboard, then hook up the monitor cable again.

If that doesnt help then the troubleshooting steps of trying a different monitor to see if thats the problem, if its not then, if you have a spae or can borrow one, try a different graphic card in your PC or your card in a friends PC, to see if thats the problem.

I have a few questions for you:

Do you have a PCI/AGP card for graphics, or are you using the integrated graphics on the motherboard?

When did this problem crop up, and how long has it been functioning normally?

Did you install any new graphics hardware?

    What is your make/model PC?

Does the BIOS (startup screen) show up, and it only go blank when the OS comes in? If so, I suspect a driver issue. I'm very familiar with those!

If you do: Try going into Safe Mode, then System Properties, Device Manager (I think it's under the hardware tab), and under Display Adapters there'll be a listing, right click and disable it. Then try rebooting into normal mode and if that's it, probably a driver issue, and you can work from there. (I've noticed Safe Mode doesn't like you installing things!)

Can you get into Safe Mode? I don't know what BIOS you have, but usually on the BIOS startup screen there will be two keys to press -- one of those will take you to the boot menu, go into Safe Mode there. If you get the wrong one and go into the BIOS setup, no sweat, just quit without saving and try again.

I'm still suspecting driver issues. If you have the wrong driver or a bad driver, there won't be any picture -- this could cause the "no signal" thing, as there's no picture for the monitor to display. (On my old computer, which had driver problems, it didn't have any text, but the screen would huffily go into power-save mode.)

If you get into safe mode: Under System Properties somewhere, there should be something called the Device Manager. Then under that, there's a category called "Display Adapter Drivers." Expand it, and there should be your video card listed -- right click and disable it. (DO NOT uninstall it. This was the mistake I made the first time -- when I rebooted again, the screen made this funky-looking design.) Then reboot into normal mode, and you can work from there.

Here's a screenshot to show what I mean:

    More basic inquiry about methodology.

Have you tried plugging the monitor into the integrated port?
That is, the one on the motherboard?

If you can't get into Safe Mode, it would be your best bet to pull the ATI card, and start up the PC using the onboard graphics.
