Some pages on the net I can get to but it seems like a lot of pages I try and get to that I have been able before I cant now. It says Page Cannot be Displayed. Ive been trying to get to my email for weeks but no luck. Does anybody have any suggestions for me. Im not real computer smart so please if you have some advice explain step by step.

IT sounds like a network problem. Did you try doing a full shut down and re-boot? If that does not work, try usining your IP address in the url to access the web. Do you know your IP address? If not, I would contact your service provider. Let me know how it goes- best of luck :p -P

I have my IP Address. I dont understand what you want me to do. Almost half the pages on the net i try and access i cant. It says page cannot be displayed. Also while using the IE browser sometimes the window will come up when i browse the net and says "internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close blah blah blah then send/dont send error report" you know what im talkin about. and today i was going to my favorites menu on the IE bar and it was like flickereing and flashing on my screen. Its never done this before. I dont think it is virus or spyware related. its something else. i am overseas right now in guam and have asked the tech support up here. well these guys arent too smart and dont speak a bit o clear english. they dont know what to do. they said their network is fine and its nothing with them. but ive had nothing but trouble with their internet service since ive been here.

can someone please help me out. im gettin frusterated. thanks anybody who has any advice.

If your service provider says there is no problem it sounds like a DNS problem locally. Try looking at your host file. It may have gotten hijacked. If your not sure what a host file is do a googel search for more information. Basically it is the first stop for a browser to look to see if a certain webpage has been added to speed up its name to IP resolution. Another suggestion is to clean out ALL your past history and Cache created from IE. That could be another forum in itself but as fjm1 suggested switching to Firefox is probably the best thing ANYONE can do now to safer surfing.

    Good luck

well I have Firefox too. I have used it for months. Still have the same problems on that browser as I did on IE. those links you guys gave me too. I cant access. Thats what I was talking about earlier. It says Page Cannot Be Displayed. I cant view like almost half the pages on the net.

so what do i do with this host file thing. like how do i find out if it has been compromised?

OK here is a host file. yours should look exactly like this

    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

do a windows search for files "host" it does not have an extension. open it in notepad. If you have a bunch of other entries under the locahost line then your file has been hijacked.

Another technique is to ping a domain....ie bring up a cmd prompt and type ping hotmail.com You should get an ip resolution. I did not get any replies but the name resolved to 64.4.32.7 I then typed that ip into my browser and bam..... Hotmail login. What you did was bypass the computers host and your internet servers DNS and went strait to the site. If that works with hotmail and any other domain then it is definately a DNS problem. If not then my guess is, it is the network you are on.

ok boss. i did a ping for the hotmail. it kept timing out. i put the ip in my browser but came up with a cannot find hotmail.com page.

i also searched for hosts. i found 49 files. which one is the one i look for.

If the ping request times out it is because the name resolution is working, try

    tracert sitename

Your problem seems to be firewall related not DNS.

Try going to netscape and install the latest navigator, then try going to the Internet and surfing to the sites you are unable to get to with Internet Explorer. If things work with netscape then you will know the problem is with Internet Explorer. If netscape and Internet Explorer both do not work then the problem is a firewall, or you are not an administrator of the system you are using.

The problem is with the winsock, you need to somehow download the tool. Look further down on thread and you will see my link, Please try that, I am pretty sure it will work.

First try this: Optimizing & Measuring the "Speed" of Internet Connection.

Did Not help? May be the info here will help.

Link to: Basic Steps in cleaning Internet "Junk".

P.S. People here can be the Biggest geeks in the world, but they do not sit in front of your computer.

Usually there is a High correlation between computer knowledge and the capacity to report what is wrong. As an Example announcing a symptom like: "Hotmail does not work", would yield an immediate answer, there can be many reasons to Hot Mail not working.

It is a catch22 type of situation since if you would know how detect and report correctly the issue you would know what to do and will not need us.

So the process here is mainly a Trial and Error and if it does not help there is always you local computer store. ;)
