I get the "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" error when I try to access desktop links that always worked before. Even when I'm in IE certain links cannot be accessed. For instance, on the MSN homepage, I can't access "Slate" links or when I'm in eBay I can't pull up their "Search" engine & my desktop shortcut for "eBay Search" doesn't work anymore. My wife's computer sits right next to mine and hers works fine on the above described links......so I know there is something askew in my 'puter. I have no problem connecting to the Internet and can browse for hours with no problems other than the above. Thanks for any advice/info......GROK!

I forget where on win98 this file is.. but do a search for "HOSTS" on your system. You should get a file that says HOSTS with NO file extenstion.. rename this file to "OLDHOSTS". Then try your sites again. if this works, then there is an entry in your HOSTS file that is redirecting the IP to a dead end.

    pages not displaying

I had this same problenn running MS Esplorer v6 sp1 and a cable modem. I have to reboot the cable modem on occasion to deal with this problem buy turning it off and then on after 1 minute. This is a good practice anyway because it speeds your download connection on re-boot which is about 3MBPS in my case. You bet it is quick!!
You can always go to the run winwinconfig and release and and renew your PPP Adapter. This gives a new reset of the server and should give you access to those old pages. I went through a long diagnosis of this and it was because the PPP adapter was not changing out the server and thus the address every so often.
    Hope it works!

Umm Kodo I have the same problem and when I read that and decided to search for hosts (I have winxp) and I got two with the same name but in different locations, one in C:\Windows\1386 and the other in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ect also when you say no extension do you mean none in the name? But anyway both their file types are "file"....

The file actually used in operation is "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc". I believe the other folder you mentioned is used when need to restore back to the original. No extension means the filename does not get followed by the ".xxx".

Ken is correct. In windows XP it is in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ect
in windows 2000 it is in
    C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\ect
I just can't remember where it is in Win9X

    In Win9x, it's under C:\windows

ahhhh typos and cut and paster.....where you see "ect" should be "etc" ;)
