I need help with downloading TV shows!!!

Ive been using supernova/shareaza to download tv shows that ive missed and Im having a problem with the type of files....if i download something that has VCD-TVL behind it i have no problem viewing it but most shows have either HDTV-LOL or PDTV-LOL and when i try and play them i only have sound and it says im missing codecs...i have no idea what that means...i use windows media player to watch...what can i do or download to make me able to get picture to go along with the sound as it seems that most shows only come in that form.....PLEASE somebody help me!!!!
