i need help with drivers

hi i have been trying to install the geforce 6800 gt driver and it keeps stuffing up my screen..when i boot up without the driver it shows funny vertical lines running down the screen when the driver is installed it gets worse can't hardly see anything on desktop ,i have to keep restoring it to an earlier time just to see.... i have got as follows
amd 3500
asus a8v mb
1g (2x512) kingston hyperx ram
antec 550w power supply
pny geforce 6800 gt 256mb graphics card

i have installed all updates except sp2 will this help? bios has been updated as well ,i'm using xp pro.. have been trying to get things going for ages it's getting really annoying..do i need a special display driver for my acer al1731 flat screen? also what other drivers do i need! and any bios setting that should be enabled? someone suggested running an RMA what is this and how do i do it?i am new to computing .. any help will be most appreciated.

All i can tell u is that SP2 is not going to be of any help. Just check out n be sure that this isnt a hardware problem. Moreover u may very well get the drivers from the internet. Perhaps d drivers may not be okie..Anyways i hope u get over this problem soon.
