i need help with wireless stuff

hey i just got my laptop like a month ago and i basically got it for no reason b/c i cant get internet for both my desktop and laptop... think wireless cost lots or somethin but i got a spliter or something that makes the internet goto my laptop and desktop, but it doesnt work for some reason, but once i get it to work is there a way i can get something to make my laptop with wireless internet? like some i can go outside with it and stuff?

 

yeah its called a wireless router, it takes your internet and puts it out over a frequency that a card in your laptop can transfer info with. by the way this should be under the networking threads.

ya, u also need a wireless card in your laptop to connect to the router, so go buy a new router and a wireless ehternet card

 

just curious what type internet do you have? ex: dial-up, cable, adsl?

ya it really would only work with like cable i think, maybe dsl, do they make wireless for dialup?

 

they do i think but the connection is already so slow that the wireless would make it almost non-existant.

Get a wireless card for your laptop and don't forget to get a wireless router, too.

ooo ok with the wireless router is there basicly like 2 parts to it? i connect 1 part to my laptop in the back somewhere? and the other part in where the cable does? the receiver rite? and whats with the card? why do i need that for?

 

i would recomend going to best buy or office depot. going to their computer area and getting the linux's wireless router and a wireless card for your laptop. if you get lost in there i am sure someone will be able to help you find what you need. tell us what you buy.

grr not this linux stuff again lol, i had another post i had yesterday about what linux was and lots of people told me it was a free operating system like windows but you can code it or whatever i think, whats a linux wireless router do i need linux to use it? or what

 

if you getting wireless u need the card to receive the data, it takes place of the cord, if you go to a store like best buy, they can tell you what you need, you have cable so get the fastest router and tell them you need a card for your laptop and they will show you where those are too, they may be cheaper online but if there are rebates at the store there wont be much difference in price plus i think best buy can install the card into your laptop for you if you dont know how to do that

oh so you have to buy a wireless card (is that what its called? just Wireless Card) and i install that into my laptop, (do i open the laptop up and does it just clip in there somewhere?) and i buy a wireless router and hook that up to my cable box... i think i got it now, but how would it kno... i mean like if i had to laptops and put a card in both comps and had one router like how would it kno to use internet... omg i can explain it but im confused about that part, and hehehe yup yup

 

i'm sorry i meant linksus. thats the name of the company that makes the router and wireless card. yes just go there and buy the wireless router and then buy the card for your laptop.

it works like that, yes you have to open your computer to put it in, in some laptops its very easy to install them just by opening a little flap and putting it in, other are a little more difficult, but if you just bought it it should be easy, read the instructions and you can install it yourself, also if you go to best buy or somewhere they can help explain how to do it a little easy by showing you with one they have in the store, and they routers just put out an area of the signal so you can have many computers hooked up to wireless internet as long as they each have a card and are in the area of the router

 

The simplest thing to do would be to purchase what's called a Wireless Networking Kit-- just about every router manufacturer sells one. It consists of a 4-port wireless router and a wireless PC card for your laptop. The PC card goes in the slot in the side of your laptop-- no opening the case necessary. The router, in addition to having wireless capability to communicate with the wireless PC card, has four wired ports, one of which you can connect your desktop to with a standard ethernet cable. There is fifth port on the router to which you connect your cablemodem-- assuming your computer currrently connects to the cablemodem via an ethernet cable from a network card in your desktop or laptop. The router will take care of letting your two computers share your cable or DSL internet connection.

 

oo i get that ya mean now eric, and irish and my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite, and on the side there is a flap where you put somethin in at, i dunno what goes in there but could that be there the wireless card goes? and to anyone... umm how does it kno how to get on the internet what if i have 2 laptops with the cards in? which one would have internet? and doug i think i kno what you mean.. a lil bit lol

 

both would but they would be sharing the connection so it won't be as fast as one laptop using the connection. basically they would split the connection in half.

ya probably in there, look at the instructions if you have them, or maybe look really close and there might be ingraved letters or something, or open it and see if theres writing in there, but the router just sense and receives signals in a sertain area, so you can have many many computers with wireless all using internet at the same time as long as they are in that area of the router

 

yeah you could have many many computers one it but the more computers you have on a wireless connection the slower the connection will be. i only run my laptop wireless and i have my desktop hardwired to my modem but don't use both at once.

The wireless portion of the router will allow several simultaneous wireless connections from multiple wirelessly-connected computers, both to it and to share the internet connection. I doubt you will have more wireless computers in your house than it can handle.

Each computer connected to the router, both wired and wirelessly, should enjoy pretty much the full bandwidth of that cable internet connection. Only if both computers are doing some very intensive downloading at the same time will you notice any speed difference.

if there was someone next door to you with wireless you would be able to use his connection just as well as him if you are within the range of his router and visa-versa.

aight awesome, and all i need to do is just get the card put in my comp hook the router to my cable box and bam im ready? you kno how much all that goin to cost too?

 

the router should be about 70 and the card about 30. so some where around 100 bones should cover ya. when you get it all be sure to read all the instrutions while setting it up and you should have no problems. if you have any problems you know where to post em.

um for the sake of simplicty when you go in there look for the linksus router and it should say that it is 802.11g and just make sure that your card is 802.11g compatible but if you get confused in there one of there people will help you out and probable make it easier for you to understand.

oo ya whats the difference between the 802.11g and the extreme 802.11g (cost more) and i was on circuit city webpage and is the card im suppose to get is the adapter rite?

 

it should say wireless card for laptop or desktop depending on which application you want it for. some companies call it an adapter.

o,ok good, and ya its for the laptop, and the router is $70 and the card is $50, so thats like $120, same price for all the other brands linksys, d-link and all of them, anyone got a site with the linksys cheaper? or should i just go and buy it at circuit city b/c i hate waitin lol
