I had to take my laptop back to factory specs--I asked for help but no one would answer my call for assistance after I posted what I was told to post. Now there is alot of crap back on my puter and I dont know what I can get rid of or how to disable it from startup--- a little help would be nice. I dont have any of the crap cleaner, spyware, or malware stuff yet-- I havent even put norton back on it yet. That will be done tomorrow when I can get them on the phone so that they can walk me through it. The problem that I had before I took it back to factory specs was that it was acting like it was molasses--- very slow. someone plz help this old lady

The very first thing you should do is install all defenses before even going online.
    Firewall, AntiVirus, Antispyware.
Being online without them is like walking on a target range with a target on your back.
Then trim down your Startup list.
Do a good Defrag of your hard drive.

Is this the same laptop you were previously working with?

yes this is the same laptop-- the only thing that I have done is the updates and updated my internet explorer to 7. I really need help with everything. I will put Norton back on but which firewall should I put on that wont clash with Norton

I would stay away from Norton. Can be a real pain in the you know what.
I suggest Avira AntiVir from this site.
For a firewall, I use Comodo Personal Firewall.
Both are free and very good.
    Antispyware I suggest:
MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware for periodic scanning.
SpywareBlaster for watching the "front door".
    And WinPatrol.

You need to post in the software forum ;) This being the welcome centre doesn't get as many views as in the software forum.

Don't know what version of Windows you are on, but if you are on Windows 7, goto Start/search field....type in msconfig and hit enter.

Click on the statup tab. Pretty much anything in there that is listed as C:program Files etc you can disable from startup.

Try starting there and see if there is an improvement. I am here to help!

PC Decrapifier is what you can use to remove most of the old pre-installed programs from your Windows reload.

If you can post a screenshot here of your Add/Remove programs, we can advise on what to remove and what, if anything, they ned to be replaced with.

Download and install Startup CPL, you run it from the icon loaded in Control Panel. This gives you control over what starts with windows.

    Download this:

    Trend Micro HijackThis

Install it and open up the program. Do a system scan only and save a log file. DO NOT attempt to fix any lines yourself, just attach the log it creates and let's take a look at what's starting up that needn't be.

    Hi

Instructions on HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

Can you tell us at this point with no security apps (Norton etc) on your PC is it working and booting OK?
Could also use PC-Decrapifier to remove alot of the junk apps theat OEMs install, which will help reduce some of your startups.

    Hi

From your list, the below can go, most are updaters or control panel options that are put in the system try from your Intel Graphics to the Sigmatel audio, these options and control panels, can be found in the Windows Control Panel anyway, or in the case of Intel Graphics from Right Click > Properties on the desktop.

    [igfxtray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
    [igfxhkcmd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
    [igfxpers] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
    [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe
    [SigmatelSysTrayApp] stsystra.exe
    [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
    [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    [ISUSPM Startup] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm.exe" -startup
    [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start

[ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe ~ can go but run this to remove it as its the alternative input methods for MS Office but us this app HERE as its eary to disable CTFMON. *great little app I always carry on USB pen

Do you use the Google Toolbar? if not uninstall it as its a waste of resources if not.

EDIT: do reboot your PC, as you have some items that need a reboot, the Adobe uninstaller in RunOnce key is one of them that will be uninstalling the Adobe Download Manager and temp files.

    Hi

No delete them, can do this with CCLeaner, Just click Tools > Startup, highlight the entry and click Delete.

Do note that if you update thinsg like Java, Apple iTunes/Quicktime, Adobe Flash/Reader then some of these will come back just need to delete them again.

If you dont wish to delete manage them with StartupCPL

But I always delete these types of entries, as a personal preference, just dont use msconfig, can cause issues at times.

The only thing that jumped out at me was Norton. You should download a different AV program, uninstall Norton ( as I am sure it is a trial anyway ) and once that is done, install the new AV ( suggesting Avira, Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials).

Please give the Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) a run > reboot your machine and then run it again for good measure.

Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Flash player, Adobe reader update, Java 2 Runtime, Realplayer basic, Viewpoint Media player are all way out of date, insecure or spyware.

Replace them with Foxit Reader and the latest versions of Flash and Java.

Both threads on same issue and laptop merged, always best to stick to one thread on an issue, saves duplicating advice, cheers.
