I am new to Apple Mac's, and I have gotten an old Powerbook G4 with Mac OSx ver. 10.4.11 and I have tried to add software to it but I always get messages about upgrading my OS to a later version. Is it possible to this on this old Apple? And if so... How?

The latest OS X version for PowerPC-based Macs is 10.5.8, so you can't install Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

Instead, check that your Mac can run Mac OS X Leopard http://support.apple.com/kb/sp517
If so, you can purchase Mac OS X Leopard online at sites such as Amazon.

Make a backup of your Mac with Carbon Copy Cloner, then insert the Leopard DVD and upgrade.
After upgrading, open Software Update, and install the most recent Leopard version.
