I want to recover some old audio (speech) which was recorded about 40 years ago on a defective reel to reel recorder. The recording has a background AC hum and also other noise, a constant squeal, that I want to filter out. Does onyone know of a program that will allow me to create a phase reversal type of filter to clean up the recording? Most of the ones that I have looked at appear to only filter out pops, clicks and hisses (from old records). I am running Win2K and have all the hardware needed (I think).

    Thanks

Thanks for the lead. Didn't know exactly where to start looking for this particular problem. I'll check it out. :)

I have used GoldWave for such operations. Use Audiograbber to copy that speech to disk. Then open this file in GoldWave, select and copy a small section with noise only (no speech or music) to Clipboard and use this sample as a filter (under Effects>Filter>Noise Reduction).

You may want to invest in Wavelab -lots of plugins that will allow you to mess with phase problems.
Give it a try -I'm sure that one of the plugins is exactly what you 're looking for.

Thanks again to all of your responses. I am investigating each of your suggestions. The speech recording that I want to clean up is about 30 minutes of one of my deceased grandmothers. It is the only known recording of her voice and I want to preserve and share it.
