I had gotten a new genuine version of win xp for my comp after I discovered the comp I bought had a bootleg version, and I tried to do a fresh install by "wiping" my drive, but when I just installed and got running I am at only 22gb left on a 40gb HDD, and on my other comp it was no where near this problem, same hdd size. Win xp and bellsouth internet connection are the only things that should be taking up space, so it seems as if I didn't wipe my old operating system out. Can someone please help out with this? Send replies to the email of (Removed E-Mail Addy) or reply to this. Thanks for your time, have a good one.

Your drive may be partitioned. That makes 2 or more logical drives in one physical drive. If you check in My Computer, does it show more than one hard drive? (assuming you only have one hard drive in your computer.

What does your BIOS see the drive as?

Sorry for the delay in responding hopefully can still get some help on this. I'm not exactly sure how to get into the BIOS and look, I'm only an advanced beginner, sorry. Can someone just start me completely over on this from square one, how to wipe the hard drive and start a fresh install? I'm getting a little too frustrated here and know I can do this myself with some help instead of paying the neighborhood kid $50 an hour.

Well, there are different ways to get into the BIOS. You have to press a key when you boot the computer. Sometimes it is DEL, sometimes it is F2 and some other stuff.

Just to clarify, you wiped your drive using the legit Win XP drive, and your windows installation takes up 18Gigs of hard drive space?

what I did was try to do a fresh install from the new genuine XP disk I bought at CompUSA since the version that was on here was bootleg. I went thru the bootup from cd-rom way at the beginning when windows starts up, and it said it was going to delete my old partition, but it doesn't seem to have done that. This is why I'd would rather just start completely over buy wiping the drive again, because I know just installing XP and bellsouth is not 18gb.
