    1. Packet loss
    2. Ping times.

Finally my replacement modem / router arrived back today, and I am now on Broadband ADSL 2+. :major

Theoretical Maximums are 24,576 / 1024 Kilobits per second, if you are on top of the Exchange.

I am 2.6 kilometres away (about 1,6 miles) and a graph leads me to beleive I should be getting around 10,000 Kbps on downloads.

Best I have got so far is around 2,500 kbps (2.54Mbps) or a quarter of what I expected.

I have managed to tweak settings from 276 / 165 Kbps to 1467 /163 Kbps.

Looking for anything I can tweak further.

I have run TCP Optimiser, plus other recommended tweakers, but am still coming up far short of what I expected. There will be very few people here, in Cairns, on ADSL2+ so I don't think heavy user usage is the problem.

Any suggestions, tweaks, tutorials very welcome. Bazza

PS: Hell of a lot better than dialup. :D;):) Baz

look at tcp optimiser in the broadband tools, and have a general look around the site.

Thanks for the link, studiot. I have already checked out TCP Optimiser.
I am still looking for tutorials, if possible. Anyone? Bazza

Bump. Still trying to tweak my Broadband settings.:(

I am not satisfied with the Download speed. It should be much faster with what I have signed up for, taking into account distance from Exchange, possible number of users on-line at any one time and condition of wiring from Exchange to my home, etc.

    I tried the MS defaults.:(:p
They were hopeless. I printed them out from the Dr Tcp settings, as changed by MS.

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/578 gives you DrTcp to download as well as a testing program.

Unblocka at http://www.unblocka.com/ did wonders over the MS settings.

I'm going to tackle the ADSL2+ suppliers here in Cairns today or tomorrow, and the my ISP providers on Monday to see what speed I should expect to be getting, 2.6K's from the Exchange.

In the meantime, any articles you can recommend to read will be most appreciated. :) Bazza

    Thanks zbd21, and BirdBath. :)
I spent an hour yesterday with a friendly tech (late Sunday afternoon, even) at my ISP provider.
Turns out the line provider only has me hooked up for ADSL, not ADSL2+ that I signed up for.(

In ADSL, late yesterday, I got 443.65KB/s download from an Aussie test site.:)

The tech recommended that I position my modem / router as near as possible to where the phone jack enters my unit.

Tried that. Now no DSL handshaking at all.:cry Tried lots of combinations of connecting wires, modem positions, reset modem to defaults and reload all over again.

Nothing. Ah well, back to the old faithful AOL dialup this morning.:D

    Never thought I'd say that.
3 more hours to go and I'll be back onto "my ISP techie". :D

Usually when this happens one of those dangly bits has got in the way.

    ;);)

I don't mean the hat corks I mean the filters.

Check there is a clear line through to your modem, as once the signal has passed through one there is no DSL in it, only in the dsl outlet.

Not sure what you mean, studiot.confused
Even with a straight through connection (no filter) it still doesn't work.:p

In my Router / Modem (Netcomm) Dynalink RTA 1025W, the DSL light does not come on, and stay on. It just flashes (handshake mode).

It has to be green, and not flashing, otherwise there is no Broadband connection ( established.

I did RTFM.:D (more than once, actually) ;) Bazza

I may have been barking up totally the wrong gum tree, Bazza.

However I've seen it time and again (and done it myself) when you rearrange the feed from the master socket and plug the modem in somewhere else the the DSL signal goes because of a filter somewhere. I now carry a special reel that I can plug directly into the incoming feed and run out to the modem. That way I know it is not the cabling.

Other than that you will have to use your famous shout at the provider.

    Good luck

The continuing Broadband battle continues... :)
My ISP techies now advise me that the chipset in the Modem / Router I chose
is not compatible with the ADSL2+ standard from the phone provider. :cry

Wouldn't you know it. I chose the Dynalink Router /Modem RTA1025W because
it came out tops in the 20 fastest Broadband modem test in APC mag, April 2007.

Now I need to try and convince the supplier to swop / trade my Router in on
a chip compatible Modem / Router.
    Will it ever end?

    I hope so. Bazza

pity bout dat. I didn't like to suggest your modem might not be up to the job or faulty, but that would have been my next angle.

First we have the good news, then we have the bad news.

    Good news.

Broadband is now working, as per ADSL1.

Just did a speedtest with an Aussie site. Got 86KB/sec. (691.20 kbps)
Still around 16 times faster than dialup, for the same price.;)

    Bad news.

Not compatible with ASDSL2+ (and Optus in Cairns).(

Will try and barter existing modem for an ADSL2+ compatible.
If that fails I will by a compatible modem, and sell this one.
Still good for ADSL, which most people have here in Cairns.;) Bazza

Off to OPTUS shopfront today, to see what Router / modem options they provide / sell / recommend.

I have printed out their website recommendations so will take that in with me. Bazza

ADSL2+ WiFi modem / router, as recommended by OPTUS, will arrive at midday today.:cool
Not the fastest in the APC mag comparison, but OPTUS supported.
We will see what happens with this one.:)
