A couple of weeks ago I upgraded to v5 of windows update so that I could download the RC2 of service pack 2 for windows xp pro. Now I realize that it is a beta version of windows update for a reason. It doesn't work at all and I ended up getting the service pack release off of MG. I want to know if there is a way to downgrade to v4 again. The one that I know worked for me. This problem is probably very simple to fix but I'm not sure how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Try deleting the folder "C:\WINNT\Windows Update Setup Files" or C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files" and clearing the cache. That didn't work for me though, so I'm not sure.

Alternately, you can go ghetto and just browse to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. That works for me.

as well as above you will need to remove the V5 update class file from here C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files and allow WU4 to assign you a new one... say YES at the security notice that will popup.

Alright here's what I got so far:

    1. I tried going into the downloaded program files and deleting the files there but that didn't make windows update show the download thingy on the website-so that wasn't it.

    2. I tried going to v4 directly but it redirects me to v5.

    3. There is no folder called winnt. I think that is a system file and I forgot how to enable it to show system files. I can get it show hidden files but not system files.

    4. I have also deleted all offline content (the cache).

    So, so far no luck.

I had the same problem and read this solution on another forum. Go to windows\system32 folder. Scroll down to the wuweb.dll and delete it. You can back it up if your scared, but I did it and it worked fine. It reverts you back to the v4 update. I was brave so I downloaded the v5 and the SP2 and everything is perfect. Like I said back up the file if you worried.

    Works for me.

Delete wuweb.dll and all is well.

If it pops back up before your eyes, then it is in use. Delete it in safe mode and see what happens.

try it and see.... but you will have to use the url to WU4 posted earlier to get updates.... to be honest I dont use Auto Update for the reason I want to pick what updates I want to install, YES I get all of the security one's but some of the others have been known to mess things up in an already stable PC.

If all else fails, where would I be able to go to download updates besides the windows update site.

it says that my CD key isn't valid but i know its legal since i bought the copy of xp pro when i made this computer. i also double checked to make sure by going to the Key validation thingy in win xp that tells whether it is or not and it says it is.

have you spoken to MS over that?

yep some users or SP2 have had the same issue with valid keys... not much of a way around it afaik.

curiosity what PID do you have only give me the middle bit for securitys sake...... but some legit codes are being blocked.

right click my computer > properties and whats the PID .. similar to below example ( number thats showing is what I'm after )
    xxxxx-640-xxxxxxx-xxxxx

we use XP machines in work and use VLK and I'm just trying to get ahead of what may happen when SP2 is rolled out as final as I've been reading all sorts of info on pitfalls etc etc with it picking up legit PID/Keys

you get any messages when going to WU5?

seems from what i'm reading these and more are being blocked by WU5 >
643, 644 and 647 are being shown as illegal copies.

you will need to contact MS ... I know SP2 is beta and things may change but you will want clarification as to why you not getting access to WU.

i tried contacting them online through messages like emails and everytime they read it they say the problems is closed because its a beta and they can't with betas.

    Ha! Found a solution!

Open up HijackThis, do a scan, and scroll down to O16. There should be an object entitled "WUWebControlClass". Check that and have HJT fix it. Next time I went to WU, I got v4.

Although, I'm on Win2k, not XP, and certainly not XP SP2.

    Ahem!!
In the certain knowledge that many of you will disagree with me, I ran W98Se for a long long time without updates but always using a good firewall and an uptodate AV program. And i kept all the debris out of the system. Had very few problems while others around me had some big ones using updates from MS. Now on XP Pro + feb 2004 update and I will soldier on without any more updates on the basis that if it aint broke don't fix it. Again good FW and AV.
    And clean out the Gunk!
I know the above is not helpful to the problem but it seems to me that the problem may have been created unnecessarily. MS does not have a good reputation for upgrades and fixes.
    I rest my case
    Cheers All
    Robert

I hope you don't mind me saying this.

That was the stupidest thing I have ever heard in my life.

Here is a newsflash for you friend.

The second your firewall stops working (and don't think it won't some day. Software is not infallable) you will get infected with one or more worms. The Sasser worm in itself usually brings othe nasties with it to the party.

Then, your antivirus will be rendered helpless as it terminates the process(es) running it.

At that point you will suffer random reboots as your machine is exploited. You will likely see performance problems, and you may even get sensitive information on your computer shipped off to a hacker.

Did I paint a clean enough picture for you?

Because it is very possible it could happen.

Sorry if I came off harsh, but this is exactly the kind of thing that lands people in calling MS and me spending the day fixing them. Spyware/viruses are the number 1 call to MS.

Yeah I downloaded HJT and also looked for the WUWebControlClass and I couldn't find it. It also wasn't listed as one of the things in the log.

If you don't want V5 windows update, then uninstall SP2!

    Problem solved.
